Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s got a masterful performance from Sean Gilmartin Sunday afternoon,
and the offense came through with a few runs to earn them the win. Gilmartin
was fantastic, allowing just one Fresno baserunner to reach 2B (Colin Moran in
the 5th), and two of the hits he allowed were to that same Fresno
player. The 51s managed 9 hits in this game, but they were mostly scattered
singles, and playing small ball may have cut short their best chance for a real
rally early. If it were June, Gilmartin probably would’ve been allowed to throw
9 shutout innings Sunday, but since it was only his second start of the year,
he was removed after 7 dazzling innings. Chase Bradford would work the final
two innings of the frame, ending a game with a strikeout of that one batter who
got to Gilmartin (Moran).
Gilmartin
should be a well-known quantity to Mets fans at this point, so I don’t really
need to tell you about his stuff, but this was Gilmartin at his best, and it
was a pleasure to watch. Matt Reynolds had a big night in the plate and a good
night in the field at shortstop. Gavin Cecchini is healthy, the 51s were just giving
him a rest day at DH, and he had an 0-fer. Reynolds looks great early, so
whenever the Mets are interested in a solid defensive infielder that should hit
some off the bench, he’s ready. I really like Brandon Nimmo as the 51s leadoff
hitter. No team has ever complained about a leadoff hitter being too passive if
they have a high OBP, and Nimmo’s always been a high OBP batter.
I
break this game down with GIF higlights and more details below, so enjoy! One
interesting note: these two teams combined for 20 walks on Saturday and then 0
walks on Sunday. This series wraps up Monday afternoon, with Stolmy Pimentel
scheduled to start for Las Vegas, and a 3:05 PM ET expected start time.
Scoring Highlights
Johnny
Monell and Travis Taijeron picked up singles for Las Vegas in the 2nd,
but they’d be stranded at 2B and 3B. Wally Backman had Roger Bernadina sac them
over even though he’s been one of the team’s hottest hitters.
Brandon
Nimmo picked up his hit with one out in the 3rd, but he’d be
stranded at 2B in the frame.
Matt
Reynolds picked up his first triple of the game leading off the 6th
inning, and then came around to score the games first run when Travis Taijeron
singled into LF two batters later.
Dilson
Herrera led off the 8th with a single into RF and then Reynolds
drove him in with his second triple of the game. Reynolds would come home on a
sac fly from Taijeron.
Defensive Highlights
Matt
Reynolds made this nice play in the 7th.

*14% Swinging strike rate
First pitch strike to 11/24 batters faced (46%)
Gilmartin
worked a perfect 1st, striking out A.J. Reed swinging to finish the
frame.
Colin
Moran was the only thorn in Gilmartin’s side, and he picked up the first Fresno
hit with one out in the 2nd – he’d also pick up their second hit of
the game. Gilmartin sandwiched the hit with a pair of strikeouts: Matt Duffy
swinging and Jon Kemmer looking.
Gilmartin
added a strikeout of Andrew Aplin in the 3rd inning.
He
worked another clean inning in the 4th, striking out Reed and Duffy
to finish the frame.
Moran
and Nolan Fontana picked up singles in the 5th, but Gilmartin
stranded them at 1B and 2B – Moran was one of only two Fresno baserunners to
get into scoring position Sunday, with Eury Perez reaching 3B in the 9th
the other player. Gilmartin added his 7th strikeout in the inning
when he got Kemmer swinging.
His
final strikeout was against A.J. Reed to end the 6th, punctuating
his performance by taking down Fresno’s biggest bopper for a third time in the
game.
Chase Bradford
Chase
Bradford struck out the first and last Fresno batters he’d face: Tyler Heineman
leading off the 8th and Colin Moran to finish the game.
