Recapish
Duane
Below finally got his 2016 season started Wednesday night in Sacramento, and
provided the 51s with just what they needed: depth. The 51s had a great turn
through the rotation end Tuesday night behind Seth Lugo, who couldn’t get out
of the 3rd inning, so Below’s quality start was huge for the team. More
importantly though, the team finally started hitting with runners in scoring
position Wednesday night, and they scored more runs behind Below than they had
the previous three games combined. Matt Reynolds and Ty Kelly led the way on
offense, with 3 hits and an extra base hit apiece, including a long bomb for
Reynolds. Chase Bradford and Dario Alvarez combined for 4 K’s over the final 3
frames, easily holding on to what became a 6-run lead.
After
brushing off the rust in the 1st inning, Below picked up right where
he was while pitching for Las Vegas in 2015. As 51s announcer Russ Langer put
it, “He’s not going to knock the bat out of your hands, but he knows how to
pitch.” He also helped at the plate by drawing a walk and providing a single,
both of which extended the inning for a Dilson Herrera RBI hit. Chase Bradford
worked two sharp innings for Las Vegas, and continues to be one of the most
consistent relievers in the 51s pen early. Dario Alvarez seems to be over his
struggles from the first 10 days of the season, as he’s now K’d 4 of 5 batters
over his last two appearances.
I
break down the scoring below with highlights, so enjoy! This series continues
in Sacramento Thursday night at 10:05 PM, with Gabriel Ynoa scheduled to pitch
for Las Vegas. T.J. Rivera left after being hit by a pitch in the 6th,
so hopefully everything is OK with him.
Scoring Highlights
T.J.
Rivera doubled Travis Taijeron home from 1B after he walked leading off the 2nd
inning.
Matt
Reynolds picked up his first hit of the night in the 3rd inning,
lining a two out single into CF.
Ty
Kelly singled into CF with two outs to keep the 4th inning alive,
and then Matt Lujan made the key mistake of walking Duane Below to bring up
Dilson Herrera. Dilson came through with an RBI double that tied this game up
at 2.
Reynolds
led off the 5th inning with his second homerun of the year. After a
pair of walks, a new pitcher, and a sac bunt, Rene Rivera came through with a pop
up ground-rule double that bounced just fair down the RF line before hopping
out of play. Dilson added an RBI single 3 batters later to cap the scoring for
the frame, and make it a 6-2 game.
Reynolds
would also lead off the 6th with a hit, this time reaching on an
infield single to 2B. Reynolds would eventually come around to score on an RBI
single from Rene Rivera, and then Ty Kelly doubled home another Las Vegas run
to make it 8-2.
Las
Vegas scratched out one last run in the 8th without the benefit of a
hit. Roger Bernadina drew a one out walk, stole 2B, went to 3B on an E2, and
then scored on a sac fly.
Defensive Highlights
Matt
Reynolds had a great day in the field at 3B.
Dilson
Herrera nearly made a great diving stop on the first ball in play of the 3rd
inning, but it took a weird hop off his glove instead. He got a chance for
redemption just two pitches later, when a grounder was hit his way to start a
double play – check out Gavin Cecchini behind the play.
