Recapish
The
Binghamton Mets managed to scrape together 10 hits Saturday afternoon, but 9 of
them were singles, and only one of them came with a runner in scoring position
(and it didn’t even drive in a run!). Meanwhile, Erie also finished with 10
hits, but 7 of them went for extra bases, and the Sea Wolves pulled away from
the 4th through the 7th and finished with a 7-2 win.
Manager Pedro Lopez was ejected in the 6th, but it did nothing to
spark a fire in the B-Mets bats.
B-Mets starter Rainy Lara was
smacked around by Erie, allowing 6 runs on 7 hits, 6 of which went for extra
bases: 4 doubles, a triple, and a controversial homerun. Jason Krizan led off
the 6th with a ball smoked off the foul pole down the RF line,
though it was originally ruled to have bounced off the wall by the ump closest
to the play. The MiLB.tv feed didn’t pan to the foul pole in time, but the
announcer’s had originally thought it was a homerun off the pole.
Only one B-Mets starter didn’t
finish with a hit Saturday – Phillip Evans, who went 0-3 with 3 K’s and a pop
out in his Double-A debut – but it didn’t matter, because the hits were not
strung together or well-struck. Evans is taking the roster spot of Jeff McNeil,
who is out with a sore hip.
I recap some of the highlights from
this game below, so enjoy! The B-Mets will look to Mickey Jannis to stop the
bleeding as the series wraps up Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM.
Scoring Highlights
Dominic
Smith picked up his single in his first AB of the game leading off the 2nd
inning.
Stefan
Sabol sparked the B-Mets first run with a leadoff single in the 3rd
inning. Kyle Johnson and Derrik Gibson added one out singles to load the bases,
and then Sabol came home on a fielder’s choice groundout. The inning ended in
an unfortunate manner: with Maikis De La Cruz running, Niuman Romero hit a
sharp liner ticketed for the outfield, but instead it found Maikis – he didn’t
really have much of a chance to react to it.
Matt
Oberste and Colton Plaia picked up consecutive one out singles in the 4th
inning, but the other 3 B-Mets batters to bat in the frame struck out.
Kyle
Johnson and Derrik Gibson started the 5th inning with singles, but
Smith would ground into a double play with the bases loaded to end any scoring
threat.
Maikis
De La Cruz led off the 8th with a double and then came around to
score on a pair of groundouts.
Defensive Highlights
The
B-Mets turned double plays in both the 6th and 7th innings,
and then Phil Evans finished the 7th with a nice play ranging to his
left.
