Minor News
If you have any link
tips, suggest them to @Astromets31 on twitter and I’ll add them in.
Check
out yesterday’s results here. The BB-Ref linker was down Friday, so no player links for now.
The
Mets announced the signing of first round pick David Peterson. He will report
to the Brooklyn Cyclones.
Maggie
Wiggin of SNY says Amed Rosario could
improve the Mets infield defense – you don’t say? If you follow me on
twitter or this blog at all, you’ve already known that for a bit, but it’s a
good piece.
There was one piece of her article
that I’d like to address, as I’ve seen it around the internet before and my
experience disagrees with the comment. She says: “The biggest reason [for
Amed’s high error total] is that players with exceptional range will get to
more tough plays, increasing the odds of a bobble or an off-balance throw.” While
the second part is true, in my experience watching a lot of minor league games
the past few seasons, if a player shows extra range getting to a play but can’t
finish the play, it’s just a hit (or changed to one after the game). The
exception being on throws, because if a bad throw allows the runner to advance,
then you have to give an error.
As
for Rosario’s error total so far, I’ve seen them on MiLB.tv and they’re just
little mistakes that pop up, nothing serious to worry about. He’s made 13
errors at shortstop in 678 innings, with 5 of those coming on throws and 8 on
botched fielding plays. The throwing error rate is fine, and the botched plays are a
mixture of rougher infields in the minors and Rosario’s inexperience/youth
allowing him to lose focus during a long minor league season. That’s NOT a
knock on Rosario’s focus or anything, just something that happens with all
young players as they learn what it takes to make it through a long season before they reach the majors.

I officially reserve the right to use a 3-star system (like last night) when short-season affiliates are in action.
Minors MVP of the Day
– Jhoan Urena.
Minors Cy of the Day
– Marty Anderson. I nearly went with a 3-Cy night, which would've gone Anderson, Andrew Church, and then Christian James.
