Recapish
After
taking game one and with their top starter of 2017 on the mound, the Las Vegas
had to feel pretty confident heading into game two of their series with the
division leading Salt Lake Bees. Unfortunately for Las Vegas, Pill had to leave
early with tightness
in his biceps, and the 51s could never dig their way out of the early hole
he left them in. A night after scoring ten runs on thirteen hits, the 51s were
limited to just three runs on six hits against lefty John Lamb and the Bees
pen.
Per
the linked LVRJ article, Pill felt the tightness during warmups, so it’s easy
to Monday morning QB this one and say he shouldn’t have started. Credit Pill
for trying to pitch through it so the 51s pitching staff didn’t get messed up
(again), but it’s not ideal seeing one of the Mets current top depth options
trying to pitch through an injury, however minor.
Pill
allowed two runs on a pair of extra base hits in each of the first two innings,
and then he tossed a perfect 3rd before leaving. Wheeler took over
for Pill and allowed another Bees run in the 4th, which made it a
5-0 game.
The
51s had a walk erased on the bases in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th
innings. The first two were erased on double plays, and Travis Taijeron was
picked off in the 5th. The pickoff came at an unfortunate time, as
Phil Evans and Jiovanni Mier combined for back-to-back RBI hits later in the 5th.
Victor Cruzado also added a single in the frame.
With
the score now at 5-2, Wheeler was sent back out for the bottom of the 5th,
but again the Bees scratched on a run against him.

Alberto
Baldonado and Ben Rowen would combine to keep Salt Lake off the board for the next
three innings, which kept the door open for any potential 51s comeback.
However, the 51s scattered just three hits after their 5th inning rally:

However, the 51s scattered just three hits after their 5th inning rally:
Dominic Smith singled to extend his hit streak to 17-games
in the 6th.
Cody Decker singled leading off the 7th.
Travis Taijeron hit his 15th homer of the season
leading off the 9th, which made this a 6-3 game.
Looking
ahead, the 51s have a chance to take a 2-1 series edge over the Bees Sunday
night. Donovan Hand (1-3, 6.29 ERA) is scheduled to make the 9:05 PM ET start
for Las Vegas, and he’ll be looking to bounce back from allowing five runs over
six innings during his last start at Tacoma.
