Recapish
The
Brooklyn Cyclones trip to Aberdeen got off on the wrong foot Wednesday night,
as the offense came out whiffing in a 6-1 loss to the Iron Birds. Brooklyn
managed just three singles and three walks against the Iron Birds staff, and
they combined to strikeout twelve times, with four coming from leadoff man Leon
Byrd. Cyclones starter Trent Johnson took a shutout into the 6th,
but then his one mistake of the night just cleared the short porch in RF for a
two run homer, which left him taking the loss.
The
Mets selected Trent Johnson of Santa Fe College in the 16th round
last year and sent him to Kingsport, where he worked exclusively out of the
pen. He was hit around a little with Kingsport, but the more important stat for
rookie ball pitchers is K/BB, and his 14 K: 4 BB ratio in 16.1 IP was good.
He’s been much more effective this year with Brooklyn, and just as sharp,
posting a 9 K: 3 BB ratio in his first eleven innings. He’s 6’5 and doesn’t
turn 21 until August, so there’s a chance he can get a few more MPH out of his
arm, but for now he’ll top out around 90 MPH with his four seamer, and mix in a
two seamer, curveball and changeup.
Johnson
had to work with one base runner on in every inning except the 4th,
and he only got through with no base runners because the leadoff single he
allowed was erased trying to stretch his hit into a double. He finished with
five strikeouts and, as mentioned, the only mistake he made gave the Iron Birds
a 2-1 lead. It was the second homer of the season for Seamus Curran, and he was
just getting started.

The
Cyclones offense hasn’t exactly been standout the past few seasons, and so far,
this year’s group hasn’t been any better. It was not pretty for the Cyclones
lineup, and they didn’t even make the Aberdeen pitchers work until the 9th.
Franklin Correa connected for Brooklyn’s first hit of the game leading off the
3rd, but he never made it past second base.
Walter
Rasquin led off the 5th with an infield single, stole second and
went to third on a groundout, but the Cyclones couldn’t get him home.
Brooklyn
finally broke through in the 6th, and for a moment they held a 1-0
lead. Jose Medina worked a one out walk, stole second, and then came around to
score on a Quinn Brodey RBI single, his first hit as a pro.
And
that was it for the Cyclones offense. Joey Napolitano came in for the 7th and
had trouble getting the first out. The Iron Birds extended their lead to 5-1 on
three singles and a throwing error before Brooklyn finally turned a double play
for some outs. Joey Naps finished the frame with a strikeout, and he did get
grounders from four of the other five batters during the inning, but the
throwing error was on him.
Lefty
Kurtis Horne of Sooke, Canada took over for the 8th and ran into a
wrecking ball named Seamus Curran. This shot from Curran was a bit more
impressive than his first, and a good sign for Oriole’s fans that it came off a
lefty. Horne settled down to beat the next four batters, although one did reach
on an E4 against Byrd.
Looking
ahead, the Cyclones will give the ball to Darwin Ramos Thursday night to try
and stop this slide.
