Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies offensive woes continued Friday night as they dropped the
rubber match of their series with Greensboro 6-2. Despite going just 7-37 with
runners in scoring position against Charleston last weekend, the Fireflies
somehow managed to get worse in those situations during their three-game series
with the Grasshoppers, finishing a measly 3-29 as they dropped two of three
games. Cola starter Blake Taylor wasn’t as bad as his final line would suggest,
but this marks two straight rough starts for him since he turned in his best
performance to date (eight
scoreless on 7/3).
Taylor
was hurt by three extra base hits in this game, the first of which came during
the 1st inning. Taylor struck out Brian Miller and Eric Gutierrez in
the 1st, but Justin Twine tripled and scored in between the two at
bats.
After
a short stint on the DL, Gene Cone made his return to the Fireflies lineup,
DH’ing from his customary leadoff spot. Cone took a HBP in the 1st,
went to second on a Luis Carpio walk, and then came around to score on a Jacob
Zanon RBI single.
The
Green Jackets went down quietly in the 2nd but jumped back on top
with a run in the 3rd. Brian Miller doubled with one out in the
frame, and Taylor retired the next two batters, but Miller still came around to
score an unearned run. He’d advance to third on a passed ball, and then came
home on a botched pickoff attempt from Brandon Brosher – Brosher’s throw sailed
over Colby Woodmansee’s head and into left field.
Taylor
was burned after issuing a leadoff walk to Gutierrez in the 4th.
Walker Olis singled him to third, then both runners advanced on a wild pitch
and eventually came around to score and make it 4-1.

Columbia’s
next wasted scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the 4th. Luis
Carpio led off the frame with his 15th double of the season and made
it to third with one out, but the Cola sluggers couldn’t get him home. Dash
Winningham reached on a HBP, but Desmond Lindsay and Brandon Brosher went down
swinging.
In
the 5th, Taylor ran into two out trouble that led to two more
Greensboro runs, which likely kept Taylor from getting a chance at the 6th.
He issued a two out walk to James Nelson with a runner at third, and Gutierrez
followed with a two run double to make this a 6-1 game. Taylor’s night ended
with a strikeout of Olis.
Manager
Jose Leger went to his pen for the 6th and that was it for the
Grasshoppers offense. Joseph Zanghi and Matt Pobereyko combined for four
perfect innings and eight strikeouts (three for Zanghi, five in a row for
Pobereyko), making their jobs look easy. Enjoy the strikeouts!
The
Fireflies offense was only slightly more productive over the final four frames.
Dash Winningham collected a pair of singles, but the main attraction was a solo
blast off the bat of Desmond Lindsay, which made this a 6-2 game in the 6th.
After
dropping back-to-back series, the Fireflies welcome Kannapolis to town for a four
game series. Columbia will send Gabriel Llanes (4-6, 3.24 ERA) to the hill in
the opener Saturday night (7:05 PM), as they look to get back on track and send
an intimidating message to the Intimidator’s.
