There
are rumors swirling that the Mets are willing to listen to offers for Jacob
deGrom, and this has caused a lot of speculation and trade chatter among Mets
fans. Given the White Sox haul for Jose Quintana earlier – two top-100
prospects (one top-10, the other in the 90’s), and a pair of High-A guys with
less upside – the Mets should be able to demand 2-3 high-upside, high level
guys, plus a lower level throw-in or two for deGrom. Alternatively, the Mets
could ask for a major league player or two to headline the deal, perhaps
targeting a young third baseman or catcher that they can build around going
forward. Thinking outside the box, maybe they can package deGrom with an
outfielder (I mean Jay Bruce/Curtis Granderson) and/or a reliever as part of a
deal for both major league and top-minor league talent.
Personally, I’d listen to calls for
deGrom, and see how creative teams were willing to get, but I’d be very, very hesitant
to trade him. He’s 29 and he’s been one of the top starting pitchers in the
majors since he debuted in 2014 (2.91 ERA, 26.2 K%: 6.5 BB% over 590.1 IP),
which is obviously why he’s worth so much in a trade – Fangraphs
just described him as, “probably a top-10 starter.”
The problem with trading someone
that good is trying to replace him. It’s nice to get a bunch of pieces that may
play a role down the line, but trading a core piece to fill in some holes is a
backwards way to operate. You have to be certain that at least one of the guys
you get back is a core piece moving forward, or else what’s the point?
The Mets control deGrom through
2020, so that gives them three more seasons to roll the dice with Jacob
deGrom-Noah Syndergaard-Steven Matz at the top of their rotation (maybe Matt
Harvey too, if he can regain some shoulder strength). Even without deGrom, the
Mets have a good young core plus Yoenis Cespedes and whatever haul they’d get
from deGrom to build around for 2018, so trading him wouldn’t necessarily mean
booting next season. But given the choice between a prospect haul or competing with
deGrom for the next three seasons, I would choose rolling the dice on
deGrom-Thor-Matz three times.
