Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies dropped their opener in Charleston Friday night, as starter
Thomas McIlraith couldn’t build upon a six hitless performance in his last
outing. McIlraith allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits Friday, and Nick
Green once again held the Fireflies bats in check. Columbia managed just one
run on seven hits – all singles – and they had more errors on the scoreboard
than hits after six innings.
McIlraith
started his night with a perfect 1st and two scoreless frames, but
then the game snowballed on him during the 3rd and 4th
innings. Red-hot Brandon Wagner doubled off McIlraith in both the 2nd
and 3rd innings, and he knocked in two runs with his 3rd
inning double. McIlraith also issued a pair of walks in the 3rd as
the River Dogs jumped ahead 3-0.
Vinny
Siena connected for the Fireflies first hit of the game in the 3rd,
and Desmond Lindsay singled with two outs in the 4th, but neither
led to a good scoring opportunity for Columbia.
Carlos
Vidal doubled for Charleston in the 4th and eventually came around
on an E3 to make it a 4-0 game.
Colby
Woodmansee singled for Columbia in the 5th and Ian Strom added one of his own in the 6th.
Thomas
McIlraith worked a perfect 5th, striking out Wagner for some revenge
during the frame. Unfortunately, although McIlraith only allowed a pair of
singles in the 6th, he left with one more run in and a runner on
third because the Fireflies combined for three errors on a play. Reliever
Cameron Griffin took over for McIlraith and allowed that second run to come home before finally
ending the frame.
The
Fireflies finally got on the scoreboard in the 7th: Brandon Brosher worked
a one out walk, went to second on a Jay Jabs single, to third on a wild pitch,
and then came home on an Ali Sanchez single. At this point, the River Dogs went
to lefty reliever Trevor Lane and he shut things down the rest of the way. Ian Strom did manage a single off him in the 8th, but that was it.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies give the ball to Blake Taylor Saturday night, and the
lefty is coming off eight scoreless innings during his last outing.
