Recapish
The
Fireflies troubles in Charleston continued Saturday evening, as Columbia took a
13-2 beating from the River Dogs for their second straight loss in this series,
and fourth straight loss in Charleston overall. Fireflies starter Blake Taylor
finished with zero strikeouts and was charged with ten-plus runs for the second
time this season, and this time all eleven runs charged to him were earned.
Coming off his best start of the season, Cola’s lefty didn’t have his best
control and was singled to oblivion. Columbia’s bats showed some life early,
but must’ve been pretty dejected after falling behind 11-2, because they
managed just two hits after the 4th inning.
Columbia
actually held a 1-0 lead early, as Dash Winningham tripled and scored the
game’s first run in the 2nd.
Blake
Taylor allowed a leadoff single in the 1st, but he’d pick that
runner off to face the minimum in the frame. He allowed another leadoff single
in the 2nd, and this time the River Dogs runner stole second and
scored to make this a 1-1 game.
The
Fireflies had a chance to jump back ahead in the 3rd. Dan Rizzie
singled through the left side and went to third with one out on Luis Carpio’s
14th double of the season, but Cola couldn’t get the runner home
from third with less than two outs.
That
proved costly when Charleston put a four-spot on the board in the 3rd.
The River Dogs worked a walk and hit four singles in the frame – all on line
drives – and they got the runs home playing mostly station-to-station baseball.
Columbia
responded with a run in the 4th. Jay Jabs doubled and Ali Sanchez
knocked him in two batters later to make this a 5-2 game.
Then
the bottom of the 4th happened, and this game was basically over.
Taylor allowed another four singles and a walk, but he also allowed a double,
hit a batter, and issued a second walk before Matt Blackham finally come out to
get him. Blackham induced an inning ending double play shortly after entering,
which finally put an end to the River Dogs rallies. Blackham faced the minimum
over 2.2 IP, striking out four Dogs along the way.
Jabs
and Rizzie had the final two hits for Columbia.
The
River Dogs extended their lead with a run each against Taylor Henry and Matt
Pobereyko. Pobereyko allowed a pair of doubles in the 8th, but he
also struck out a pair of batters, which is something he’s doing a lot this
year.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies will welcome Gary Cornish off the DL for Sunday’s matchup
with the River Dogs.
