Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies bounced back from an early 2-0 deficit to take game
two and sweep their double-header with the Harrisburg Senators Sunday
afternoon. Bingo start Casey Delgado was knocked out in the 3rd
after issuing five walks, but the Ponies reliable pen stepped up to shut the
Senators offense down over the final five frames. While the Ponies pen was
doing its thing, the Bingo bats were struggling to get anything going. They
finally had some chances late, but they wouldn’t have jumped ahead without a
yuge error from the Senators in the 6th. Once ahead, Corey Taylor
shut things down in the 7th for a 3-2 Ponies win.
Delgado
has been struggling with walks all season, and he’s nearly doubled his 2016
walk output in a similar number of innings this year, but he’s generally been
able to settle in to give the Ponies 5+ innings. That was not the case Sunday,
however, as he was knocked out before the 5th for just the third
time in thirteen starts this year. Three walks from Delgado brought home the
first Senators run in the 1st inning, and he would leave trailing
2-1 after issuing his fifth walk of the game in the 3rd.
After
doubling in game one, L.J. Mazzilli had an even bigger game two, finishing with
three hits while playing a role in both Bingo rallies. His first hit was a
single that advanced David Thompson (walk) to second in the 2nd, and
then Tyler Moore knocked Thompson in three batters later with a single of his
own to make it a 2-1 game.
Scarlyn
Reyes was the first Rumble Ponies reliever out of the pen, and he inherited a
runner on first with one out in the 3rd. He’d strand that runner on
third to escape the jam, and went on to pitch 2.2 scoreless innings of relief
with two strikeouts. Reyes hasn’t had the best first half for Binghamton, but
his last two outings give hope that things are starting to click (6.2 IP, 6 K:
0 BB, 4 H, 0 R). So watch out Eastern League, because he has big league stuff
if it ever does: mid-90’s fastball can get up to 96 and a hard upper-80’s
slider.
The
Ponies scattered a pair of hits during the middle innings: Mazzilli singled
leading off the 4th and Champ Stuart doubled to right in the 5th.
Delgado
wasn’t the only starter with control issues in game two Sunday, as Wirkin
Estevez issued four walks and threw just 52 of 101 pitches for strikes. Because
the Ponies ran his pitch count up early, he had to leave after just five
innings of work, and the Bingo bats were able to break through against reliever
R.C. Orlan. David Thompson reached on an infield single to get the winning
rally started. He went to third on Mazzilli’s third hit of the game, and a
Patrick Biondi walk loaded the bases for Binghamton with two outs in the frame.
It was left to Tyler Moore, and he hit what should’ve been an inning ending
gorunder to second, but Corban Joseph made a key throwing error that allowed
Binghamton to jump ahead 3-2.
Corey
Taylor had worked a dominant 6th inning, striking out two batters
during a perfect frame, so he was sent back out to finish off the double-header
sweep in the 7th. He ran into some initial trouble, as the first two
grounders against him led to singles. Fortunately, the next two batters also
hit grounders, and those two grounders went for three outs to seal the deal
with the tying run stranded at third.
Looking
ahead, the Rumble Ponies will give the ball to Corey Oswalt (5-3, 2.13 ERA)
with the chance to earn a four-game series win with the Senators Monday night –
game time is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
