Recapish
Chris
Flexen came off the DL for the Rumble Ponies Thursday night in Hartford and
dominated for six innings, striking out ten and limiting the Yard Goats to one
hit. Hartford came back some against the Ponies pen late, but the bats had
provided enough of a buffer to absorb the four late runs allowed. Luis
Guillorme and Matt Oberste led the way at the plate for Binghamton, as the two
combined for six hits, two doubles (Guillorme), a homer (Oberste), three runs
scored, and four runs batted in.
Champ
Stuart led off the game with a single, stole second, and went to third with no
outs on a wild pitch, but the Ponies couldn’t get him home.
Flexen
started his night with four straight strikeouts and thirteen straight retired
overall. He struck out the side in the 1st on 16 pitches, Correlle
Prime leading off the 2nd, Anthony Phillips in an 18-pitch 3rd,
Drew Weeks in the 4th, and then Prime again to start the 5th.
Binghamton
took control of this game with a five-run 3rd, when they connected
for four hits and worked a pair of walks. Chris Flexen sparked the rally with a
one out single, and Guillorme doubled him home two batters later. Oberste kept
the train rolling with an RBI single to right to make it a 2-0 game. The final
three runs came home on a L.J. Mazzilli single down the right field line, which
was booted for an E9. Credit Kevin Kaczmarski for flying around the bases to
slide in just ahead of the tag.
Guillorme
and David Thompson singled in the Bingo 5th, but the Ponies left
runners on the corners in the frame.
Flexen’s
perfect night was ended when Jan Vazquez took him deep in the 5th,
but Flexen rebounded to strikeout three of the final five batters he faced.
Nido
led off the 6th with a double, his thirteenth of the season.
Oberste
gave Binghamton some insurance when he launched his fourth homer of the season
to deep left center in the 7th. Kaczmarski added a singe in the
frame.
The
Yard Goats charged back with three runs in the 7th, all of which
were charged to Corey Taylor. Taylor issued a leadoff walk and allowed three
singles before finally getting an out. Ben Griset would take over for him in a
bases loaded situation, and he allowed two of those runners to come home before
finally ending the inning with a strikeout.
The
Ponies 2-3 hitters struck again in the 9th to make this a 7-4 game.
Guillorme connected on his second double of the game and then Oberste singled
him home.
Hartford
would get one more run back when Josh Fuentes took Cory Burns deep in the 9th,
but it was too little too late for the Yard Goats. After earning a split of this
four-game series in Hartford, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies headed home to start
a weekend series with the Harrisburg Senators. Mickey Jannis is scheduled to
start the opener Friday night in Binghamton.s
