Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies arrived in Altoona riding high on a three-game winning
streak, but Altoona’s Tanner Anderson put an end to that with eight shutout
innings, and the Curve took the series opener 6-0. Binghamton starter Marcos
Molina was making just his fourth start in Double-A, but this was his least
effective start to date. He failed to finish six innings for the first time,
and managed just one strikeout and four swinging strikes all night. Ben Griset
and Scarln Reyes combined on two-plus innings of relief for the Ponies, but the
Bingo bats never got any sort of comeback rally going.
While
Molina wasn’t at his best throughout the start, he found one Altoona batter
more troublesome than the rest. Leadoff batter Kevin Newman finished a triple
shy of a cycle against Molina and was involved with everything bad that
happened for the Bingo starter. Newman started his night with a double in the 1st,
and eventually came around to score the games first run on a sac fly.
The
Curve took advantage of a Bingo error in the 2nd to make this a 3-0
game. With two on and one out, Anderson dropped a bunt up the first base line
that was fielded by a charging Matt Oberste. Oberste spun and threw to third,
but his throw was well wide and went into LF for a run. David Thompson held the
bag with a good stretch at third, but the throw was off the tip of his glove so
he was charged with a missed catch error. Newman added an RBI groundout for the
Curve.
I
thought the first error on Thompson was more unfortunate than major mistake,
but his fielding error in the 3rd was just a mistake, as the ball
went right through him – camera panned too late for the play, but that’s how
the announcers described it, and Thompson’s body language reflected someone who
thought they should’ve had the ball. Despite the two errors, Thompson’s total
is just six so far in 2017, and his defense at third has been very consistent
in the two years I’ve seen him on MiLB.tv – good fielder with fringe arm
strength who’s made up for the light arm with accurate throws.
Molina
was able to work around the error in the 3rd, and then Thompson had
one of two Binghamton singles in the 4th. Kevin Kaczmarski had the
other single, but the Ponies couldn’t get either home.
Newman
struck again in the 4th, launching a two run homer with two outs to
make this a 5-0 game. Molina bounced back for a quick 5th, finishing
the frame with his only strikeout, as Jin-De Jhang went down looking. But
Newman would strike one more time, connecting for a two out RBI single in the 6th
to knock Molina out of the game.

It
led to nothing, but Luis Guillorme got his name on the books for a two out
single in the 8th.
Looking
ahead, the Rumble Ponies will give the ball to Chris Flexen as they look to
even this series Wednesday night.
