Recapish

The Columbia Fireflies dropped their opener with Kannapolis 7-2 Saturday night after a sloppy performance on both sides of the ball. Columbia finished with as many errors as hits Saturday, and none of their four hits came with runners in scoring position. The four errors led to four unearned runs charged to Gabriel Llanes, and they forced Llanes to get extra outs in the 1st and 3rd innings. The Intimidators pen held Columbia to just one hit over 4.1 IP, and this game raced to a finish once the starters came out.
Llanes didn’t have a great 1st inning, contributing to the problems himself with an errant pickoff throw during the frame, but he finished the frame strong and was much more effective after that. He struck out Aaron Schnurbusch to end the 1st, and had a streak of seven straight retired that stretched into the 3rd.

It looked like Llanes would be done with the 3rd when a two out grounder was hit towards Colby Woodmansee at third base, but Woodmansee threw the ball away for his second throwing error of the game, and things snowballed on Llanes after that. Casey Schoeder doubled homer a pair of runs and came home on an Aaron Schnurbusch RBI single as Kannapolis opened a 6-0 lead.

The Fireflies answered with a run in the bottom of the 3rd, and it was created completely by Andres Gimenez. He led off the frame with a bunt single, went to second when Desmond Lindsay worked a walk, stole third, and then scored on a wild pitch.

Llanes walked a batter in the 4th and hit a batter in the 5th, but he needed just 23 pitches for the two innings.

Ian Strom started the Cola 5th with a triple and then came home on an Andres Gimenez sac fly. Lindsay would single later in the frame.

After retiring the first batter of the 6th, Llanes walked a batter and hit a batter, and then Gavin Sheets made this a 7-2 game with an RBI single. That was it for Llanes, as Cameron Griffin was called into the game to finish the 6th after the Sheets single. Griffin allowed a single to the first batter he saw out of the pen, but he struck out Luis Gonzalez to strand the bases loaded in the frame, and retired eight straight over 2.2 IP.

The only Cola hit against the Intimidators pen came when Dash singled in the 8th.

Adonis Uceta worked a scoreless 9th with a juicy strikeout of Jake Burger.

Looking ahead, the Fireflies send Gary Cornish to the hill Sunday as they look to even this series with Kannapolis.
