Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s bats stayed hot in Salt Lake for their second double-digit run
performance of this series, taking a 12-7 win to gain a 2-1 series edge. Both
starters struggled, but Donovan Hand was able to settle in and give the 51s
some length while his teammates unloaded a season’s worth of frustration on the
Bees pitching staff. Down 5-0 after two innings, the 51s scored nine runs over
the next two innings and never let up after that, which should be the motto in
the PCL. Cesar Puello hit a monster homerun off Hand and had an overall good
game terrorizing his former team again, but his efforts couldn’t even keep this
one close.
Victor
Cruzado had the game’s first hit in the 1st, but the Bees would score
five runs before Las Vegas collected another hit.
The
51s had five hits and a walk as they battled back to tie the game in the 3rd
inning, but the frame started when Phil Evans reached on an E6. Gavin Cecchini,
Jayce Boyd, and Xorge Carrillo singled for Las Vegas in the frame, Travis
Taijeron hit a two run double, and Amed Rosario laced a two run triple to the
RF corner that he might’ve been able to score on.
After
allowing runs over the first two innings, Hand worked a perfect 3rd,
but things might’ve gone differently with a different defense behind him. Amed
Rosario made a bare handed play while running at a high speed that few
shortstops have a chance of making, and Dominic Smith made a nice pick on hot
shot to his backhand.
Las
Vegas sent just eight batters to the
plate as they took a 9-5 lead in the 4th. Dominic Smith extended his
hit streak to 18-games with an infield single in the frame, while Gavin
Cecchini and Josh Rodriguez provided doubles, with two runs coming home on the
J Rod shot to center field.
Cesar
Puello hit a solo blast off a convenience stand in LF during the 5th,
which temporarily made this a 9-6 game, but that was as close as the Bees would
get the rest of the way. Also shown below is an Evans single from the top of
the 5th.
Taijeron
stroked his second double of the game to right center in the 6th, which
has him up to 21 doubles in 2017. He’d come around to score and make it 10-6 on
an E5.
Rosario
added a pair of hits over his final two AB’s, but the 51s couldn’t get him in
either time. He doubled off a 98 MPH fastball in the 7th, and then
singled through the right side in the 9th.
Las
Vegas tacked on another pair of runs in the 8th, which gave them
their biggest lead at 12-6. Jayce Boyd and Xorge Carrillo singled in the frame –
Carrillo’s hit brought home a run – and then Phil Evans walked with the bases
loaded to bring home the twelfth run of the game.
While
Hand settled in to give the 51s some length, Manager Pedro Lopez still went to
his pen starting in the 6th. Kyle Regnault was first out of the pen
and he had the best inning of the group, working a 1-2-3 frame while racking up
the only Las Vegas strikeout of the game. Hansel Robles was throwing hard
during his scoreless 7th, but he issued two walks and only escaped
after a double play was turned behind him. Salt Lake was able to get to Ben
Rowen for a run in the 8th, but nothing more, and then Kevin McGowan
shut the door on this game with a scoreless 9th.
Looking
ahead, the 51s will give the ball to Wilfredo Boscan (3-6, 5.17 ERA) as they go
for the series win against the division leading Bees Monday night – game time
scheduled for 8:35 PM ET.
