Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s took a 7-2 loss in Tacoma Wednesday night after starter Wilfredo
Boscan’s struggles in the 4th left them too far behind for a
comeback. Boscan was making his first start since a comebacker off his leg
knocked him out of a game in he 1st on 6/23, and he had to be
carried off the field that night. The 51s offense showed some signs of life
early, but then managed just a pair of singles after the 2nd inning,
as Casey Lawrence and the Rainiers pen shut them down.
When
he’s been close to full strength this year, Boscan has been a reliable starter
for the 51s, he’s just been dealing with leg issues all season. He had a knee
issue that put him on the DL for a little in May, and the comebacker from five
days earlier could’ve definitely still been bothering him in this start – perhaps
he felt fine at the beginning and the pain came back little-by-little with each
pitch. Either way, it wasn’t easy for Boscan from the start. He allowed the
first two Tacoma batters of the game to reach and eventually come around to
score, which put the Rainiers up 2-0 after one.
The
51s responded right back with two of their own in the 2nd. Dominic
Smith led off the frame with a single, went to third on a Josh Rodriguez
double, and then both runners came home on a Xorge Carrillo single.
Boscan
faced trouble in all four frames he pitched in, and the Rainiers finally broke
through again to jump ahead in the 4th. Leonys Martin and Boog
Powell homered for the Rainiers in the frame, and Ben Rowen eventually had to
come in and get the final out for Boscan. Also, 51s pitching coach Frank Viola
was ejected during the frame. Kevin McGowan and Beck Wheeler combined to allow just one run over the final three innings, but the 51s offense never came back to life.
Amed
Rosario and Josh Rodriguez had the final two hits for Las Vegas.
Looking
ahead, the 51s will give the ball to Ricky Knapp on Thursday night as Las Vegas
looks to earn a series split with the Rainiers.
