Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies came out on the short end of a tightly contested
battle with the Harrisburg Senators Friday night, as the two teams opened a
three game series in Binghamton. Ponies starter Mickey Jannis worked into the 7th
and left in a 3-3 tie, but the Senators were able to break that tie first,
jumping ahead 4-3 with a run against Tim Peterson in the 9th for the
win. Luis Guillorme had his second straight multi-hit game and the sixth in his
last ten games. Colton Plaia also had a big game at the plate, connecting for
his first homer of the season as part of a two-hit night.
Guillorme
reached on an error to start the 1st and Kevin Kaczmarski followed
with a single to open the door for a potential big inning. However, the next
batter grounded into a double play and the Ponies couldn’t get even one run out
of the situation.
Plaia
gave the Ponies an early lead with his homer in the 3rd. Guillorme
and Kaczmarski hit back-to-back singles later in the frame, but another Matt
Oberste double play cut short any potential rally.
Jannis
cruised through the first two innings but ran into trouble in the 3rd
and needed 65 pitches to get through the 3rd-5th innings.
He was able to work around a walk and fielding error behind him in the 3rd,
but Harrisburg broke through for runs in both the 4th and 5th
innings as they jumped ahead 3-1. All four singles against Jannis in the 4th
came on grounders, two of which didn’t leave the infield. The Senators
scratched out a run against him in the 5th thanks to two more
singles and a stolen base.
Binghamton
was quick to get those runs back, scoring two in the bottom of the 5th
to make this a 3-3 game. Jannis started the rally with a single, went to second
when Guillorme worked a walk, and then they both came home on an Oberste
double.
The
Ponies offense went quiet after that, as they scratched out just three hits the
rest of the way. Colton Plaia and Luis Guillorme singled to put runners on the
corners with one out in the 7th, but Binghamton couldn’t get the key
hit to jump ahead. Champ Stuart singled with two outs in the 9th and
ended up stranded at second.
With
the game still tied after seven, Binghamton Manager Luis Rojas went to one of
his most reliable relievers in Tim Peterson, and Peterson worked a perfect 8th.
Unfortunately, Peterson was sent out for the 9th and couldn’t
replicate his success. Two singles and a sac bunt led to the fourth Harrisburg
run, and that was the difference Friday night.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies will give the ball to P.J. Conlon (5-6, 4.15 ERA) Saturday
night as they look to even the series. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 PM, and
Conlon will be having a rematch with lefty Matthew Crownover (0-3, 6.04 ERA), as
these two squared off 6/10, when these two teams were playing in Harrisburg.
