Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies started their Sunday double-header with a 1-0 win over
the Harrisburg Senators, in what was a rematch of starters from a June
10th game. Neither starter was at their best in the first
matchup, and the Ponies came up short in a 5-4 loss that day. Game one Sunday
was a totally different story, as these two crafty lefties matched zeros for
six innings, and this game came down to a battle of bullpens in the final
inning. Ben Griset did his job for the Ponies in the top half of the 7th,
but Harrisburg’s Andrew Robinson quickly found himself in a hole he couldn’t
get out of in the bottom half.
Although
these lefties were effectively keeping runs off the scoreboard, they combined
for just two 1-2-3 innings. While Conlon did have to deal with a runner on base
much of the start, he didn’t allow a Harrisburg runner to reach third until the
6th inning. He had to intentionally walk a batter to load the bases
with one out in the 6th, but Conlon was able to quickly escape that
jam on a pop out and fly out. As usual, the Ponies defense was pretty sharp
behind their pitching staff.
L.J.
Mazzilli combined for four hits during the double-header, lacing a double to
RF in the 1st inning of game one to get his big day started.
The
next Ponies hit was another double, this one smoked off the bat of Matt
Oberste, who has crushed a few baseballs over the past week.
Kevin
Kaczmarski would be the walkoff hero in the 7th, but the Ponies
actually had their first chance to knock him in from third base during the 5th.
Kacz led off the frame with a single to center, stole second base (his tenth stolen
base of 2017), and ended up on third with one out after a throwing error on the
steal.
The
Ponies got their fastest runner to third with one out in the 6th,
but couldn’t get Champ Stuart home after he led off the frame with a bunt
single.
Binghamton
was finally able to get a runner in from third for a walkoff win in the 7th
– yes, minor league double-header’s are just 7-inning games. Kacz started the
frame with a triple and Gustavo Nunez brought him home with a sac fly. Game
over.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies were set to give the ball to Casey Delgado in game two as
they go for a double-header sweep of Harrisburg.
