Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies evened their series with the Hartford Yard Goats
behind a bounce back performance from starter Corey Oswalt and another RBI
double for David Thompson. Oswalt was coming off a disappointing two-inning
performance, as he had to exit his last start after throwing a 41-pitch frame
in the 2nd, so it was good to see him go out there and toss one of
his best starts of the season. He finished with six scoreless innings in the
3-0 win for Binghamton, marking the third time he’s finished at least six
scoreless this season.
Oswalt
worked around a two out double in the 1st to keep Hartford off the
board, finishing the frame with a strikeout of Dom Nunez.
Kevin
Kaczmarski picked up the Ponies first hit when he singled in the 1st.
The
Yard Goats put together their best scoring opportunity in the 2nd,
as two singles put runners on the corners with one out for Hartford starter
Ryan Castellani. Castellani would fly out to Mazzilli in foul territory, and
Anthony Phillips tried to score from third on the play, but Mazzilli made a
strong throw home to complete the double play.
Champ
Stuart singled and came around to score the game’s first run in the 3rd.
He went to second on a pickoff attempt throwing error, to third on a Luis
Guillorme single, and then came home on a groundout.
After
escaping the jam with some help from Mazzilli in the 2nd, Oswalt
faced little trouble over his final four frames.
David
Thompson and Champ Stuart connected for two out singles for the Ponies in the 4th
and 5th innings, respectively.
The
Ponies added some insurance runs thanks to a pair of doubles in the 6th.
Matt Oberste hit the first one with one out in the frame, went to third on an
L.J. Mazzilli single, and then they both came home on Thompson’s 20th
double of the season. The 20 doubles for Thompson ties him for fifth most in
the EL.
Oberste
collected a second hit on the night in the 8th.
Tim
Peterson took over for Oswalt in the 7th and worked two scoreless
frames, striking out three batters along the way. He handed the ball of to Cory
Burns for the 9th, and Burns worked around a two out single to
finish off the shutout.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies will give the ball to Marcos Molina for the rubber match of
this series, and the final game of the first half Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM.
