Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies and Akron Rubber Ducks played their fourth game in two
days Thursday afternoon in a matchup of two guys making their Double-A debut.
Dominic DeMasi was able to go five strong innings in his Akron debut, but
Ponies starter Andrew Church was not nearly as effective over his four-plus
innings of work. The Rubber Ducks got to Church for ten runs and held an 11-0
lead as the Ponies came to the plate in the 5th. Binghamton put up a
little bit of a fuss at the end of the game, but the deficit was too big to
overcome without some Mike Piazza-level
greatness.
Church
struggled in five of his last six starts with St. Lucie, so I imagine his
promotion was more due to with convenience and need than Church being ready for
Double-A – as in, the Ponies needed a starter, and it was convenient that he
was the St. Lucie starter who lined up best for this start. If the Ponies need
a new member of the rotation, it should probably be Nabil Crismatt (3.00 ERA,
103 K: 23 BB, 103 H allowed over 102 IP) over Church (5.14 ERA, 62 K: 19 BB,
130 H allowed over 98 IP), but this start would’ve been short rest for
Crismatt.
Church
walked the first batter he saw in Double-A, but then struck out two to finish a
scoreless 1st. Known as a strike-thrower who limits walks, Church
issued a season-high six walks Wednesday (hadn’t been above two in any previous
start this year), and the outbreak of walks was similar to what happened in his
first FSL start last year (he issued seven walks that day).
He
issued three walks in the 2nd, though none of those came back to
burn him. Akron took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd on back-to-back extra
base hits and a sac fly. The Ducks had the bases loaded with one out when Luis
Guillorme started a double play to end the threat.
Matt
Oberste led off the bottom of the 2nd with the Ponies first hit, but
they otherwise struggled against Akron’s new starter.
Akron
added three more extra bases hits as they pushed their lead to 6-0 in the 3rd.
Mike Papi hit a two run homer, then Dorssys Paulino and Yonathan Mendoza
doubled for the Ducks. It took more defensive help for Church to escape this
jam, as Kevin Kaczmarski threw Mendoza out trying to advance to third on his
hit to end the frame.
After
struggling through the 2nd and 3rd, Church managed to
work a perfect 4th, though it still took him 17 pitches. But Akron
was right back at it in the 5th, and they eventually knocked Church
out in the frame. Eric Haase started the frame with his 18th homer
of the season and Todd Hankins later connected for an RBI triple. Kelly Secrest
came in to escape the jam, but he’d allow a bases clearing double before ending
the frame.
The
Ponies finally broke through against DeMasi in the 5th. Kevin Taylor
led off the frame with a double, went to third on a wild pitch and then scored
on a groundout.
Luis
Guillorme led off the 6th with a single.
Binghamton
put together a little two out rally in the 7th. Taylor singled, went
to second on a Colton Plaia single, and then came around to score on a Champ
Stuart double. Dale Burdick followed with a two run single to make it 11-4, but
that would be it for the comeback.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies head to Harrisburg Thursday for a series with the Senators.
Mickey Jannis (6.4, 4.02 ERA) is scheduled to start the opener, which has a
7:00 PM start time.
