Recapish
The
opening game finished between the Binghamton Rumble Ponies and the Akron Rubber
Ducks on 7/18 will go down as one of the weirder games either team played this
year, and possibly stick out as a source of confusion for stat guys for years
to come. The Ponies lost the opener 6-3 Tuesday, although both sides played
four innings of scoreless ball, so it’s not as if either team could feel like
they won (or lost) anything when it was over.
This game started on May 13, but
was suspended due to rain on that day, postponed due to rain multiple times
since, and finally wrapped up more than two months after it began. Somehow, the
Rubber Ducks starter from May was available to go for Akron Tuesday, so he was
fresh when play resumed in the bottom of the 3rd and probably
could’ve pushed his pitch count to the 120’s or higher, which would’ve caused
confusion from fans who went to check on the box score Thursday.
Another potential weird result from
this game came when Josh Smoker entered for the 7th. Smoker was on
rehab with Binghamton, but this game counts for May 13th, and he was
starting for the Las Vegas 51s on May 13th. That means his game logs
will show him pitching for two different teams, in two different leagues, in
two different cities, of two different time zones on the same day, and it will
have him starting one and finishing the other.
As
for the game, it was a rare dud for Corey Oswalt, and the runs allowed in the 1st
snapped a streak of 18+ scoreless innings for the Bingo starter. Oswalt allowed
nine runs combined over his first two starts, but this is the only start since
that Oswalt has allowed more than three runs during – he’s been very consistent
and effective for Binghamton this year.
Oswalt allowed three runs on five
hits in the 1st, and it took a nicely turned double play to get him
out of the jam. Akron’s Eric Stamets (since promoted) took Oswalt deep for two
more in the 2nd, when he walked three batters, and then the Rubber
Ducks scratched out a sixth run in the 3rd.
Champ
Stuart singled to start the Bingo 1st but was thrown out trying to
score in the frame.
The
Ponies put together a rally in the 2nd that made a huge dent in the
lead. Matt Oberste got it started with a double and then came around to score
on a David Thompson RBI single. Gustavo Nunez singled Thompson home a few
batters later, stole second, and then scored on a Stuart RBI double.
The
rest of the game took place in July. Scarlyn Reyes took over on the hill and
went three scoreless, pushing his streak to 12.2 IP over 6 appearances (11 K: 1
BB, 5 H allowed), although it won’t go down that way in the books because this
game counts for 5/13.
The
Ponies bats couldn’t get much done against a more experienced and fresh Pannone,
managing just a pair of hits after play resumed, including this single from
Matt Oberste in the 6th.
Josh
Smoker worked his scoreless inning of relief in the 7th. He got
ahead 0-2 on the first batter before allowing back-to-back singles. He then
struck out the next two and induced an easy come backer to end his outing.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies gave the ball to 7-inning double-header King P.J. Conlon for
game two and it went well…
#Eclipse2017 on Aug. 21 will be neat to see…but it can also help us understand how the sun energizes Earth. See how: https://t.co/b06zTlGEPo pic.twitter.com/19CRvvuU6P— NASA (@NASA) July 20, 2017
