Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies jumped ahead early and never looked back in a 5-4 matinee
win against the Legends. Harol Gonzalez was sharp through the game Wednesday
afternoon, but he couldn’t get the final out in the 7th, and then
two runs came in after he left. The Fireflies had built a 5-2 lead to that
point, so they were just able to hold on in the 7th, but then Adonis
Uceta settled in and shut Lexington down over the final two frames. Andres
Gimenez and Brandon Brosher led the offensive charge, as the two combined for
five hits, three runs scored, three runs batted in, and a pair of stolen bases.
Gimenez
and Brosher struck right away to give the Fireflies a 2-0 lead before Harol G
even took the mound. Gimenez led off the game with a single, went to second
when Jacob Zanon reached on an E6, and then they both scored on a Brosher
double that was smoked to right field.
The
Fireflies turned a line drive into an inning ending double play in the bottom
of the 1st, which helped Harol erase a single allowed. Gonzalez
tossed a perfect 2nd inning but allowed a leadoff homer in the 3rd,
which made this a 2-1 game.
In
the Cola half of the 4th, Brosher singled through the left side,
stole second base, and then came home on an Arnaldo Berrios single.
The
Legends got that run right back in their half of the 4th. Emmanuel
Rivera led off the frame with a single and Manny Olloque doubled him home with
two outs to make this a 3-2 game. Harol’s first strikeout of the game came
against Joe Dudek for the first out of the inning.
The
Fireflies responded with two more in the 5th, which proved to be key
runs for the outcome of this game. Milton Ramos led off the frame with a single
lined into CF and came around to score on an Andres Gimenez triple that nearly
cleared the RF wall.
Harol
worked around a pair of two out hits in the 5th and a walk in the 6th,
and his pitch count was at 79 as he took the hill in the 7th. He
added his second and third strikeout in the frame, but three Lexington singles
knocked him out with the bases loaded.
Adonis
Uceta had been rock solid coming in with runners in scoring position, but bases
loaded really is a no-error situation, and the first batter he faced singled
into LF for two RBI’s. Fortunately for the Fireflies, he’d settle in for
another nice performance and close out the 5-4 win for Columbia.
After
the two-run 5th, Columbia connected for five more singles, but
couldn’t add on:
Jay Jabs and Ali Sanchez singled in the 6th.
Gimenez and Zanon singled in the 7th.
Sanchez singled again in the 9th.
The
5-4 victory gave Columbia a 2-1 edge in this series, and they’ll give the ball
to Gabriel Llanes with a chance to earn a four-game series win Thursday night.
