Recapish
After
mostly being outplayed over the last 12 innings of this series, the Brooklyn
Cyclones kept things closer in game three, but ran into the Oriole’s 2nd
round compensation pick, Zac Lowther. The lefty Lowther was dominant over three
innings of work, allowing just a single and striking out five on 38 pitches.
The Mets 4th (Tony Dibrell) 7th (Connor O’Neil) and 9th
(Cannon Chadwick) round picks all made their debut in relief Friday night,
combing to allow a run on three hits over three innings.
The
Iron Birds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st on three straight
hits, including back-to-back doubles from T.J. Nighting and Ben Breazeale.
Quinn
Brodey connected for the Cyclones first hit of the game with one out in the 2nd,
but never made it beyond first base.
Cyclones
starter Gunnar Kines settled down after his rocky 1st, keeping the
Birds off the board through the 5th, with a pair of perfect frames
along the way.
Brooklyn’s
second hit of the game came from Jose Maria, with one out in the 5th.
Tony
Dibrell took over for the 6th and got three groundouts in the frame.
He also allowed a solo homer to Trevor Craport, which made this a 3-0 game.
Although he fell to the Mets in the 4th round, Dibrell has starter
upside and was one of the top pitchers in his conference this past season. I
looked through a lot of Dibrell highlights when the Mets drafted him (don’t
often see the low lights, which is why I’ve been trying to show them here more
often), and his stuff can get pretty nasty, so hopefully the Mets can help mold
him into a future major league starter. Amazin’ Aveune’s Steve Sypa wrote a
draft profile of him here
for more details on his stuff.
Reed
Gamache ripped one into the LF corner in the 7th, but held up at
first so as not to make an out with his team down three runs. I don’t agree
with the caution in this case, as the team has been struggling for offense, and
that has to be a double unless you’re just a below average runner.
Cannon
Chadwick took over for the 7th and he finished a scoreless frame
with his first pro strikeout – Sypa wrote him up here.
Connor
O’Neil induced four grounders in his pro debut, one of which went through the
right side for a single – the Sypa profile is here.
Brooklyn’s
final hit came from Jose Medina in the 9th, and he worked his way
around to third base, but the Cyclones couldn’t scratch out a run.
After
being swept out of Aberdeen, the Brooklyn Cyclones head home to start a three
game series with Connecticut. The Cyclones will make a one-game appearance on
MiLB.tv next weekend against Staten Island, but they won’t be back again until
the end of July, when they return to Aberdeen. Hopefully the team will have
figured some things out by then so they can get some revenge on the Iron Birds.
