Recapish
The
Brooklyn Cyclones started a day-night double-header in Staten Island with a win
over the Yankees in game one. Cyclones starter Chase Ingram made his second
rehab appearance with the team and was generally effective over four innings,
leaving with a 3-2 lead after 63 pitches. Much of the run support for Ingram +
the Cyclones staff was provided by third baseman Carl Stajduhar, who finished a
perfect 3-3 with a double and a homer in game one.
According
to Amazin’ Avenue’s Steve Sypa on
Twitter, Ingram was 89-94 MPH with his heater in the 1st inning,
mixed in his full
repertoire, and his curve looked a little better later in the start. The
Mets 6th round pick from 2015 made just one start for the St. Lucie
Mets before an injury knocked him out for the rest of the first-half. His final
line with the Fireflies last year may not be that impressive, but he showed a
good ability to miss bats, a fastball that can get up to the mid-90’s, and
flashed both a nice curve and a nice change with Columbia.
The
Cyclones gave Ingram a 2-0 lead before he took the mound. Matt Winaker sparked
the 1st inning rally with a single to left, went to second base on a
Walter Rasquin single, and then came around to score on an E4. The throwing
error allowed Rasquin to advance to third, and then he came home on a balk.
Ingram
allowed a pair of singles back-to-back in the 1st, but he picked the
first runner off at first before allowing the second hit.
Carl
Stajduhar started his big day with a single in the 2nd. Leon Byrd
singled him to second base two batters later, but the Cyclones couldn’t add on
in the frame.
Big
Kendall Coleman greeted Ingram with a solo blast in the bottom of the 2nd,
but then Ingram responded with a groundout induced and two strikeouts to end
the frame.
Ingram
allowed a leadoff double in the 3rd and the Yanks would get the
tying run home against him. He added two more strikeouts to his total in the
frame.
Stajduhar
got the lead right back for Brooklyn when he went oppo taco for his second
homer of the year in the 4th. The Yankees right fielder went into
the wall hard and was down for a few minutes, but he’d stay in the game.
Ingram
finished his day with a perfect 4th before handing the ball off to
his bullpen. Byrd added a second hit in the 5th, but he’d be erased
on the bases by a double play.
Gregorix
Estevez was the first Cyclones reliever into the game in the 5th and
he worked two scoreless. He walked the first batter he faced out of the pen,
but then retired the next six in a row.
Jose
Medina singled leading off the Brooklyn 6th and stole both second
and third base in the frame, but the Cyclones couldn’t get him home for an
insurance run.
Stajduhar
led off the 7th with a double to nearly the same spot as his homer,
and this time the Yanks right fielder Cesar Diaz was a little more hesitant as
he neared the wall. Franklin Correa followed with a single to advance him to
third, and then Winaker singled him home two batters later to make it a 4-2
game.
Mets
7th round pick Connor O’Neil worked a scoreless 7th to
close out the game one win. He’d allow a single but then the Cyclones turned a
4-6-3 double play to end the game.
After
providing an upset in game one, the Cyclones turn to arguably their most
reliable pitcher to date for game two: Trent Johnson.
