Recapish
The
Brooklyn Cyclones dropped their second straight in Aberdeen Thursday night,
taking a 9-3 loss to the Iron Birds to officially lose the series. The Birds
put up crooked numbers in the 5th and 8th innings, and
that was the difference in game two. Cyclones starter Darwin Ramos limited
Aberdeen to one run over the first four innings, striking out seven along the
way, but then allowed the first three to reach before leaving in the 5th,
and all three came around to score. Brooklyn’s offense showed a little more
spark than in game one, but they went just 2-10 with runners in scoring
position, leaving thirteen men on base in the game.
Brooklyn
got two in scoring position with two outs in the 1st and they were
the first two LOBster’s of the game. Matt Winaker kept the inning alive with a
walk, went to second on a Jose Medina single, and they both advanced on a
passed ball before the threat came to an end.
It
wasn’t always easy for Ramos Thursday night, as several of the Iron Birds hits
were well struck and he had no 1-2-3 innings. He started the game wild,
allowing a leadoff single in the 1st before issuing a walk and wild
pitch, which put both runners in scoring position with nobody out. Fortunately
for Brooklyn, Ramos settled down after that, striking out the next two batters
and getting a fly out to left to end the frame.
Brooklyn
jumped ahead in the 2nd on back-to-back hits from Reed Gamache and
Jeremy Wolf. Gamache doubled to left and Wolf singled him home to make it a 1-0
game.
Ramos
struck out the first two in the bottom of the 2nd and worked around
a two out single to keep Brooklyn ahead 1-0 after two.
Medina’s
speed led to a Brooklyn scoring opportunity in the 3rd even though
he struck out. He reached on a passed ball, went to second on another passed
ball, and then stole third, but Brooklyn stranded runners on the corners in the
frame.
Aberdeen
tied things up with a run in the 3rd thanks to their own speedster.
Kirvin Moesquit finished with four stolen bases Thursday night, and two came in
the 3rd to set up the Iron Birds first run.
Ramos
limited the damage in the 3rd, but it looked like he’d run into more
trouble in the 4th after Tristan Graham struck for a leadoff double.
However, Ramos struck out the next three in a row to strand Graham at second
and keep it a 1-1 game.
Brooklyn
managed multiple hits in the 5th, but the singles from Dylan Snypes
and Matt Winaker were separated by a double play.
The
first three reached against Ramos in the 5th, so Manager Edgardo
Alfonzo went to the pen to bring in Nicolas Debora. Debora is a 23-year old
righty who has been with the Mets since 2012, but he was in the DSL until last
season. He’s listed at 6’4 and it seems like he’s got some life on his
fastball, so maybe he’s been more of a late bloomer type, because it took him
awhile to get here despite consistently good DSL numbers (although, those stats
are as meaningful as the points on “Whose Line Is It Anyway”).
21-year
old catcher Carlos Sanchez had a big year in the GCL last season, and he hit
his third double of the season in the 6th, but was stranded at
third.
Debora
allowed a leadoff homer in the 7th and then couldn’t get the final
out of the inning, so Gregorix Estevez was called upon. Estevez escaped the
bases loaded jam he came into during the 7th, but he couldn’t escape
his own two out trouble in the 8th. He issued back-to-back walks
with two outs and Ryan Ripken made him pay, launching his first homer of the
year (and second extra base hit of the game) to make it a 9-1 game.
Brooklyn
put together a two-run rally in the 9th, but it was way too little,
too late. Franklin Correa singled home Dylan Snypes after he led off the frame
with a walk. He eventually came home on a wild pitch to make it a 9-3 game, but
the Cyclones had no other hits in the frame.
After
dropping the first two in Aberdeen, the Cyclones turn to Gunnar Kines as they
continue to look for that elusive third win Friday night in the series finale.
