Recapish

The Las Vegas 51s finished June on a high-note, taking a 10-6 win on the road over the division leading Salt Lake Bees. The 51s offense was clicking from the start of the game and was able to provide Las Vegas starter Mitch Atkins and the pen more than enough offensive support for a win. It was nearly a hit party for the 51s, as everyone in the lineup except Jiovanni Mier had at least one hit – Mier did have a hit… by pitch – and everyone in the lineup except Victor Cruzado scored at least one run.
Gavin Cecchini started his big night with a single in the 1st, but he would be replaced on the bases on an Amed Rosario fielder’s choice. Rosario stole second base in the frame (his 14th stolen base of the year), but was able to trot home the rest of the way after Kevin Plawecki launched his sixth PCL homer of the season.

The 51s scattered three singles in the 2nd – Josh Rodriguez, Jayce Boyd, and Victor Cruzado – but they left the bases loaded in the frame.

After a quick 1st, Atkins ran into 51s killer Cesar Puello in the 2nd and Puello took him deep for his tenth homer of the season – somehow only his third against Las Vegas, but he’s up to a .985 OPS against the 51s this year. Puello would strikeout on nine pitches over his next three AB’s, which came against three different Las Vegas pitchers (Atkins, Kyle Regnault, and Kevin McGowan).

Josh Rodriguez doubled the 51s score with the teams second three-run homer of the game in the 3rd.

Although Rosario did finish the month with his seventh multi-hit game of June, his multi-hit game pace fell off significantly during the third month of the season: he had 13 multi-hit games in April and 14 in May. His first hit of the night came in the 4th, and he came around to score on an E5.

Jayce Boyd singled in the 5th, went to second when Victor Cruzado was walked, and then came around to score on a Cecchini single through the middle. Rosario followed with his second hit of the game, but Cruzado would be thrown out trying to score on the play.

The Bees made a dent in the 51s lead with three against Atkins in the 5th and another two runs against reliever Logan Taylor in the 6th. Shane Robinson’s two run triple provided most of the damage against Atkins in the 5th. As for Taylor, a pair of walks in the 6th burned him when Kaleb Cowart came through with a two out, two run single.
With the game suddenly close at 8-6 heading to the 7th, 51s second baseman Gavin Cecchini came through with his third hit of the night to provide some insurance runs. Cecchini lined an RBI triple into the gap and came home on the play when the Rainiers committed a throwing error (charged to Cowart).

After Taylor’s command issues in the 6th, Manager Pedro Lopez went to lefty Kyle Regnault for the 7th and he worked around an E5 behind him for two scoreless innings. Regnault struck out three Bees batters along the way, and induced three grounders and a pop out to the other four batters he faced.

Kevin McGowan came out of the 51s pen for the final frame and he worked a 1-2-3 inning, striking out Cesar Puello to end the game.

Rosario at short

Looking ahead, the 51s will look to make it two straight over the Bees behind Tyler Pill Saturday night.
