Recapish
The
Rumble Ponies made it three straight in Reading Saturday night with a 5-3 win
over the Fightin’ Phils to move just a half-game behind them for second place. Corey
Oswalt started for Binghamton and was mostly in control over his six innings of
work, only falling off track for a few batters in the 2nd. Reading
went ahead 2-0 on back-to-back homers against Oswalt in the 2nd, but
Oswalt answered back with his second homer of the season in the 3rd,
and then he shutdown the Phils offense after that. The Ponies finished just
2-12 at the plate with runners in scoring position, but those two hits were
enough to be the difference in a close game.
Homeruns
have not been a problem for Oswalt this year, as he had allowed just five
homers over his first fifteen starts, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be a
concern at the highest level. Lefties have hit five of the seven homers against
Oswalt this year, and collectively they have a .164 ISO against him in 181 PA
(righties are at .092 ISO in 175 PA), which will be something to keep an eye on
moving forward. He started his night with a strikeout during a perfect 1st.
Oswalt
also started the 2nd with a strikeout, but then Mitch Walding and
Angelo Mora went back-to-back – Walding’s 21st of the season. The
next two Reading batters would reach on singles before Oswalt righted things
and finished the frame. The Fightin’s managed just a single against him over
the next four frames, and Oswalt left with a 3-2 lead after six.
As
mentioned, Oswalt responded to the homers allowed with a homer of his own in
the 3rd. He’s 2-10 as a hitter in the pro’s, and both hits have left
the yard. It was also the first Ponies hit of the game.
Binghamton
jumped ahead with a two-run frame in the 4th. Luis Guillorme sparked
the rally with a leadoff single, went to second on L.J. Mazzilli’s first hit of
the game, and then to third as a Matt Oberste walk loaded the bases with nobody
out. Kevin Taylor followed with a sac fly to tie things up at two, and then
Tomas Nido singled home Mazzilli to make this a 3-2 game.
The
score remained that way until the Ponies found some insurance runs in the 7th.
David Thompson sparked this rally with a leadoff single. He’d finally advance
to second three batters later on a Champ Stuart walk, and then came around to
score on an E4. Mazzilli’s second hit of the game brought home Champ to make it
5-3.
Corey
Taylor took over for Oswalt out of the Bingo pen for the 7th, and he
struck out three in the frame, but he also allowed a two out triple to Zack
Coppola, which made this a 5-3 game.
Taylor
handed the ball off to Ben Griset for the 8th, and Griset tossed a
scoreless frame, striking out Angelo Mora along the way. Then Manager Luis
Rojas went to his closer for the 9th and Cory Burns came through for
his eleventh save of the season.
The
Ponies had a few other hits scattered throughout the game: Guillorme singled in
the 6th, Taylor and Nido singled in the 8th, and Mazzilli
doubled in the 9th.
Looking
ahead, Binghamton has a chance to sweep this series and move into second place
with a win behind Casey Delgado Sunday.
