Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies ended their first half on a low note Sunday afternoon,
dropping their finale with Hartford 7-3 to finish the half 46-38. It was the
second time Bingo’s starter Marcos Molina was facing the Yard Goats within a
two-week span, and both times Hartford has jumped ahead 3-0 in the 1st.
The Rumble Ponies would battle back to make this a 4-3 game by the end of the 7th,
only to see Hartford pull away again with three runs over the final two frames.
Hartford
scored their 1st inning runs on three doubles, with Omar Carrizales,
Brian Mundell, and Dillon Thomas providing the two baggers.
Binghamton
answered back with a run in the bottom of the 1st. Champ Stuart
reached on a fielding error, stole second, and then came around to score on
Luis Guillorme’s 16th double of the season.
Marcos
Molina would toss a scoreless 2nd and then struck out the first two
batters in the 3rd, but he couldn’t get the third out before another
Hartford run crossed the plate. Mundell, Dom Nunez and Thomas strung together
three straight singles for the two out run, and the inning only came to a close
because the Ponies caught Thomas in no man’s land to end the frame.
The
Ponies scattered four hits between the 1st and 7th
innings: Gustavo Nunez singled in the 2nd, David Thompson reached on
an infield single in the 4th, Champ singled and stole second base in
the 5th, and then Matt Oberste led off the 6th with a
single. The only time Bingo got two runners on during that span was in the 6th
after Thompson worked a walk, but Oberste was erased on the bases in that
frame.
Binghamton
broke through again in the 7th. Colton Plaia sparked the rally with
a leadoff single, went to second on a Dale Burdick single, and then came around
to score on a Luis Guillorme single. Burdick came home on a groundout to make
this a 4-3 game.
With
the Rumble Ponies on their tail, the Yard Goats went back on the attack – on
that note, I blame the Yard Goats for the bad team names spreading throughout
the minors. Hartford scratched out a run against the Ponies pen duo of Ben
Griset and Corey Taylor in the 8th, and then added two more against
Cory Burns in the 9th.
The
game was basically out of reach by the time the Ponies came to the plate in the
bottom of the 9th, but they weren’t going to go into the All-Star
break quietly. Dale Burdick led off the frame with a triple, and then two walks
later the Ponies had the bases loaded with just one out. Hartford brought in
closer Shane Broyles to deal with the bases loaded situation and he set down
two Ponies in a row to pick up his eleventh save of the season.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies have three days off for the All Star Break and then start the
second half in Reading on Thursday.
