Recapish
The
Brooklyn Cyclones could not complete a double-header sweep of the Staten Island
Yankees Saturday night, dropping game two 7-2 after struggling with runners in
scoring position. Brooklyn went just 2-10 with runners in scoring position, and
starter Trent Johnson was hit around for seven runs (six earned) over 4.1 IP,
as the Cyclones dropped back to nine games under five-hundred.
Steve Sypa of Amazin’ Avenue stuck around for game
two, and he had Trent Johnson sitting upper
80’s in this start. The Mets 16th round pick from 2016, Johnson
had arguably been the most reliable starter in the Cyclones rotation, as he
posted a 12 K: 4 BB ratio with just 15 hits allowed over his first 16 IP this
year.
He ran into trouble right away
Saturday night, allowing a leadoff single to Wilkerman Garcia in the 1st,
and falling behind 1-0 after a wild pitch allowed Garcia to score. Things went
worse for Johnson in the 2nd, and it started with a HBP AND a walk.
He issued another walk to load the bases two batters later, and then the next
two Yanks came through with bases loaded hits to make this a 4-0 game.
A
pair of errors from Wilkerman Garcia opened the door for a Brooklyn run in the
3rd. Reed Gamache came through with a two out RBI double to make it
a 4-1 game, but that was as close as Brooklyn would get. Also shown below is
Quinn Brodey’s first of two singles in this game, from the 4th
inning.
Johnson
tossed a perfect 3rd, striking out Nelson Gomez along the way, but
again ran into trouble in the 4th. The first two Yanks singled and
came around to score in the frame. Both runners came home on a groundout to
Winaker that nearly went for an inning ending double play. Winaker fielded the
ball near the bag, stepped on first and then threw home, but his throw was low
and bounced away from Jose Maria, allowing Cesar Diaz to come around and score
from second.
Leon
Byrd had his first hit of the game, but third hit of the day, in the 5th.
For
the fourth time in five innings, Johnson allowed the leadoff man to reach to
start the bottom of the 5th, and he’d be relieved with one on and
one out in the frame. The Mets 9th round pick Cannon Chadwick came
in to relieve Johnson and struck out the first batter he saw. Unfortunately for
Brooklyn, the next SI batter singled home a run to make it a 7-1 game. They
might’ve scored more in the frame if not for an outfield assist from Leon Byrd
to end the frame. Chadwick stayed out for the 6th and bounced back
with a perfect frame.
The
Brooklyn bats broke out a little against SI reliever Chase Hodson in the 6th.
Jose Medina led off the frame with an infield single, went to second on Brodey’s
second hit of the game, stole third, and then came home on a Carl Stajduhar RBI
single. Including game one, it was Medina’s third stolen base of the day and
Stajduhar’s fourth hit.
Looking
ahead: The Cyclones had to settle for a double-header split Saturday but were
set to send another rehabbing minor leaguer to the mound Sunday. Michael
Gibbons took the ball for his third appearance of the season and Brooklyn
earned a split. After an off day Monday, the Cyclones are off to Mahoning
Valley for a series with the Scrappers. They’ll be back on MiLB.tv when they
visit Aberdeen at the end of the month.
