Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies did something Thursday night that hasn’t happened too
often in 2017: they dropped the rubber match of a series. The Ponies are nine
games above .500, which is good for the third best record in the Eastern League
(unfortunately for Binghamton’s playoff hopes, the top-two teams are both
within the division), but inconsistent starting pitching hurt them in this
series. Mickey Jannis took the hill for Binghamton in the finale and Altoona
put up a pair of crooked numbers against him early, which ultimately led to an
early exit for the knuckleballer. The Ponies pulled within one run three times,
but the Curve answered right back with runs the first time, and Binghamton ran
out of outs after the third time.
Jannis
allowed a leadoff double in the 1st and Altoona quickly jumped ahead
1-0 after a pair of groundouts. That should’ve been it for the scoring, but a
two out walk from Jannis opened the door, and that runner came around to score
after an E4 and a wild pitch, which made it 2-0 after one inning. Jannis
finished the frame with a strikeout of Wyatt Mathisen.
Kevin
Kaczmarski connected on Bingo’s first hit of the game, but his 2nd
inning single led to nothing for the Ponies.
Dale
Burdick led off the Bingo 3rd with a single, went to second on a sac
bunt, to third on a groundout, and then came home on a Luis Guillorme single to
make this a 2-1 game.
After
a perfect 2nd, Jannis allowed a double and homer to the first two
batters of the 3rd, which left the Ponies behind 4-1. Jannis bounced
back with a strikeout and pop out, but then the Curve nearly put together
another two out mini-rally. It took a strong throw from Patrick Biondi in CF to
prevent another run from scoring in the frame.
Colton
Plaia hit a single for the Ponies in the top half of the 4th inning,
and then Jannis picked up his final strikeout during a perfect bottom half.
The
Ponies rallied for two to make this a one run game again in the 6th.
L.J. Mazzilli started the frame with a single, went to second on an E5, and
then Kevin Kaczmarski loaded the bases with a single. Tyler Moore came through
with a bases loaded single to bring home one run, and then Dale Burdick walked
in another run, but the Ponies would leave the bases loaded in the frame.
Corey
Taylor took over for Jannis in the 6th and Taylor allowed a run
during both innings he worked. Taylor struck out one batter during his time on
the mound.
Scarlyn
Reyes got the next chance out of the Bingo pen and he continued his strong run
with a perfect frame, striking out Logan Ratledge along the way.
Binghamton
put together one last scoring outburst in the 9th, but the comeback
came up just short. Patrick Biondi reached on an error to get the frame
started, went to second on a Guillorme single, and then came home on Mazzilli’s
eleventh double of the season. Guillorme was able to come home on a groundout
to shortstop during the next play, but Mazzilli was forced to hold up at second
base, which proved huge since he represented the tying run. Kaczmarski followed
with a single, but Mazzilli could only advance to third base on the play. The
Ponies ended up loading the bases with one out in the frame, but they couldn’t
get that tying run home.
Looking
ahead, the Rumble Ponies will look to get back on track with a home series
against Hartford this weekend. P.J. Conlon will take the hill for Binghamton in
the opener Friday night, with game time scheduled for 7:05 PM.
