Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies came home Friday night to begin their final series of
the first-half and took a 6-3 loss to the Yard Goats in the opener. Bingo starter
P.J. Conlon took a shutout into the 5th and worked into the 7th,
but he left with the bases loaded and two of those runs came home to the
detriment of his final line. Meanwhile, Hartford starter Parker French was
effectively wild again, walking six over six-shutout innings. Overall, the
Ponies managed just three runs in a game where they worked nine walks, and it
took some two out doubles in the 8th for Binghamton to even get on
the board.
Conlon’s
walk total for the game is inflated by four intentional walks to the batter
hitting in front of Hartford’s pitcher – the #7 hitter, for some reason
(strategies aside, this is still the minors). He’s issued seven intentional
walks over his last three starts, which has his season total artificially
inflated to 28 walks in 101.2 IP. Officially, he has a 6.6% BB-rate, but if you
only include unintentional walks, then Conlon’s rate drops to 5%. That may not
seem like a huge difference, but it’s currently the difference between 4th
and 14th on the EL
BB% leaderboards.
Conlon
retired the first five batters of the game before allowing a two out double to
Josh Fuentes in the 2nd, so he issued an intentional walk to get to
the pitcher and escape the jam.
Fuentes hit another double against
Conlon in the 4th, except this time it was a ground-rule double with
a runner on first and only one out. Conlon responded with the same strategy,
intentionally walking Ashley Graeter to get to Parker French and the Yard Goats
#9 hitter. Conlon struck out French and then got Anthony Phillips to hit an
inning ending grounder to third (Phillips got the intentional walk treatment
for hitting in front of French the last time Conlon faced Hartford).
The
Ponies finally tallied a hit in the 4th when Matt Oberste led off
the frame with a single. Binghamton would load the bases in the frame, but for
PJ Conlon with two outs, and he couldn’t come through with a hit.
Hartford
jumped ahead in the 5th with a three run frame. Omar Carrizales got
the inning started with a double to center field, and then Conlon’s kryptonite
Josh Fuentes came through with a big two run single for the Yard Goats later in
the frame. For a third time, the intentional walk strategy paid off for Conlon.
Champ
Stuart singled for Binghamton leading off the 5th, but he was
quickly erased from the bases on a double play.
After
Conlon needed just eight pitches for a perfect 6th, Manager Luis
Rojas let him go out there for the 7th, and that quickly backfired.
Conlon allowed the first three to reach on two singles and his only
unintentional walk of the game. Fortunately for Conlon, Champ threw Max White
out trying to go first-to-third for the first out of the frame. Conlon was
finally able to retire Fuentes for the second out of the 7th, but
with his pitch count at 101, his Manager called for an intentional walk and a
new pitcher.
I think it would’ve been
interesting to see how Conlon would’ve fared against Graeter in that situation,
as he hadn’t actually faced the 27-year old yet in the game, and Graeter has a
.691 OPS in his second season of Double-A action. However, Graeter was in there
against Conlon and getting intentionally walked ahead of the pitcher because
Graeter has crushed lefties, while Conlon hasn’t been as effective against
righties.
Casey
Delgado took over for Conlon and allowed a two run single before escaping the
jam. Hartford actually went 2-2 against Delgado, but L.J. Mazzilli threw Graeter
out trying to score from second base on the second hit.
The
Yard Goats added one more against Kelly Secrest in the 8th to push
their lead to a game high six runs before Binghamton finally broke through.
David Thompson doubled home Oberste from 1st with two outs for the
first Ponies run of the game, and then Tomas Nido doubled home a pair two
batters later to make it a 6-3 game.
Though
they had cut the lead in half, the damage done by the Bingo bats was too little
too late for a comeback. The Ponies put up little resistance in the 9th,
as three of four batters went down swinging to end the game. Looking ahead, the
Ponies and Corey Oswalt look to get back on track in game two of this series Saturday
night.
