Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies narrowly avoided getting swept out of town Monday night in
Charleston, putting together a five-run 9th to squeak out a win in
the finale. Just like in the first three games of this series, Columbia
struggled with the bases loaded throughout the night, but then Desmond Lindsay
finally broke through with a game-tying grand slam in the 9th, and a
Dash Winningham RBI double put them on top at the end. Cola starter Gabriel
Llanes’ recent struggles with walks continued, as he issued multiple walks for
a fourth straight start, reaching four walks for the first time since his first
start of the season.
The
River Dogs announcers started the game by talking about how few strikeouts
Gabriel Llanes had this season, so of course he struck out the first batter of
the game and finished with at least five strikeouts for just the fourth time in
sixteen starts this year. He was getting some serious drop on what appeared to
be a changeup, and that pitch helped him push his swinging strike total to at
least twelve for the sixth time in 2017.
Dan
Rizzie connected for the Fireflies first hit of the game in the top of the 2nd.
Then
Gabriel Llanes lost control and threw less than 50% strikes in the bottom half.
Llanes would issue three walks in the frame, and the first two came around to
score as Charleston took a 2-0 lead. Carlos Vidal provided the big hit with a
two run double for the River Dogs, and Llanes struck out Park again during the
frame.
Andres
Gimenez singled and reached second on a wild pitch with one out in the 3rd,
but the Fireflies started the night just 1-8 with runners in scoring position,
and that one hit did not produce a run (or come in the 3rd).
Llanes
struck out Estevan Florial to start the 3rd, which started a streak
of three straight scoreless frames for Llanes before he departed. He’d add
another strikeout of Florial in the 5th, and then finished his night
with a strikeout of Isiah Gilliam.
The
Fireflies produced three hits, including a double, in the 4th, which
is often enough for a run, but they still couldn’t break through in this one.
Jacob Zanon started the frame with a single, Rizzie singled two batters later,
and then Colby Woodmansee kept the inning alive with a double. Unfortunately,
before Rizzie’s hit, Zanon was caught trying to steal second, so he wasn’t in
scoring position when Woodmansee hit his first extra base hit of 2017. Also shown below is a Jabs hit from the 5th.
Trevor
Lane took over for the River Dogs in the 6th and Columbia managed
just one hit against him over his two innings of work: an Andres Gimenez single
in the 7th.
Cameron
Griffin took over for the Fireflies in the 6th and Charleston
immediately jumped on him for an insurance run. Brandon Wagner greeted him with
a solo blast to make it a 3-0 game. Griffin bounced back to strikeout Mandy
Alvarez and kept Charleston off the board the rest of the frame.
Matt
Pobereyko took over for Griffin in the 7th and worked a perfect
frame, striking out the first two batters of the inning. The undrafted free
agent, who was released after a promising debut with the D-Backs last year (36
K: 10 BB in 27 IP across three levels, 21 H allowed), is up to 14 K: 2 BB in
8.1 IP this year. At 25, he’s obviously older for the league, but he shows good
command of a fastball/slider/splitter mix that’s getting him a lot of swinging
strikes at the SAL level, and should work out of the pen into at least the upper
minors. Other than age, not sure why Arizona would’ve passed on this kid, but
Mets brass probably isn’t complaining that he fell into their lap.
Zanon
singled again in the 8th, this time off new Charleston reliever
Hobie Harris, but the Fireflies couldn’t get him beyond second base.
Adonis
Uceta took over for the Fireflies in the 8th and had a rare rough
outing, allowing a run (unearned) for the first time since May 7th
(!). Wagner greeted Uceta with a double, went to third on a passed ball, and then
came around to score on a Vidal single. Hoy Jun Park ended the frame by
grounding into a double play, which put an exclamation point on his poor night
at the plate (0-4, 2 K, GIDP).
Columbia
finally broke through in the 9th.
Woodmansee started the frame with a single and then the Fireflies loaded the
bases with no outs thanks to back-to-back HBP’s. After Harris retired Luis
Carpio on a fly out, the River Dogs Manager came out to get him and make a
pitching change. Garrett Mundell came in for the heart of the Fireflies lineup,
and it did not go well. Desmond Lindsay took him deep to tie the game at four,
and then Jay Jabs walked, stole second and came around to score on a Dash double.
With
the Fireflies suddenly ahead, Manager Jose Leger stuck with his top reliever
for the 9th, and Adonis Uceta rewarded that faith with a perfect
frame. Uceta struck out Blake Rutherford and Estevan Florial back-to-back to
finish the comeback and put an end to Columbia’s three game losing streak.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies have Tuesday off and then return home for a three-game
series with the Greensboro Green Jackets on Wednesday. The latest Cola
game notes had no starters listed for the series, so not sure who is
starting for the Fireflies in the opener, but game time is scheduled for 7:05
