Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s had a chance to take three of four from the division leading Bees
Monday night in Salt Lake, but the lead slowly slipped away from them as they
struggled to come through with runners in scoring position. The 51s jumped
ahead 3-0 early Monday, but then couldn’t add on, finishing the game just 1-12
with runners in scoring position. The Bees got on the board in the 3rd
and then put up at least one run in each of their next five trips to the plate,
which had them up 8-4 after eight innings. Dom Smith had one of his best games
at the plate as a pro, finishing with three extra base hits (including a pair
of two run homers), but even his monster performance wasn’t enough for Las
Vegas on this night.
Dom
Smith started his big night with a two run bomb in the 1st to give
Las Vegas an early 2-0 lead. Kevin Plawecki added a single in the frame.
51s
starter Wilfredo Boscan faced the minimum over the first two innings, but then
allowed an extra base hit in each of the next five frames (four doubles, one
homer) as Salt Lake pulled away. The 51s pitching staff has been overworked
recently, and that was before long reliever Logan Taylor had to be sent to the
DL, so credit Boscan for sticking it out over seven innings. Although he wasn’t
at his best or very effective, he stayed efficient enough to give most of the
pen a night off.
Before
the game went downhill for Las Vegas, they added a 2nd inning run to
push their lead to 3-0. Gavin Cecchini doubled to start the frame and Plaw
singled him home three batters later.
There
were some chances for Las Vegas between the 2nd and 8th
innings, but the 51s just couldn’t make anything out of them. One of those came
when Dominic Smith stroked his 21st double of the season to left
field in the 7th.
Recently
promoted Luis Mateo was the only 51s reliever who didn’t get a night off. Mateo
started the season looking great out of the Rumble Ponies pen, but he’s had a
few rough outings this year too. He’s low-90’s with his heater and has a nice
slider, but that’s not exactly unique out of a bullpen. He allowed a two run
homer to Dustin Ackley, but otherwise struck out three during his first outing
for Las Vegas this year.
Amed
Rosario started the 9th with a single and then Dom Smith launched
his second homer of the night (tenth of the season), but that was all the 9th
inning magic the Las Vegas bats had in them.
Looking
ahead, the 51s head home to start a three-game series with El Paso before
heading back on the road this weekend. As usual, I won’t be covering the home
games with Cashman MiLB.tv coverage, but the feed from Albuquerque this weekend
should be good.
