Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies finished their latest home stand with a 1-0 win over Rome
Monday evening, riding a top-notch start from Blake Taylor to take the series.
Taylor earned his first win of 2017 with his best performance to date, limiting
Rome to three hits and three walks over eight shutout innings. As good as
Taylor was, Braves starter Alan Rangel matched zero’s with him for six innings
before leaving with his pitch count at just 84. The Fireflies were finally able
to scratch out an unearned run against the Rome pen in the 8th, and
then Adonis Uceta came in to close this game out for his ninth save of the
season.
Taylor
still finished with three walks issued, but two of those came in the 5th,
and this was his best start of 2017 outside of that inning. Just three Rome batters
reached second base against Taylor, and all three instances came with two outs
in the frame. He struggled to find the zone in the 5th – just six of
eighteen pitches for strikes – but threw 72% strikes during the other seven
frames.
He started his night by retiring
the first eleven Braves batters of the game, striking out four along the way:
Marcus Mooney in the 1st, Alan Crowley in the 2nd, then
Anthony Concepcion and Kevin Josephina in the 3rd. A two out double
from Justin Ellison ended the streak, but Taylor would retire the next batter
on a groundout.
The
Fireflies managed just three singles against the Braves starter Rangel, who is
a 19-year old righty with a three-pitch mix signed as an IFA three
years ago. Dash Winningham, Dan Rizzie, and Jacob Zanon connected on the
singles, but only Dash made it as far as second base.
Although
he temporarily lost control in the 5th, Taylor did add another
strikeout of Crowley to his tally during the frame. The Braves best chance of
scoring came against Taylor in the 7th. Crowley finally made contact
with a pitch to line a double into LF with two outs. He ended up on third after
a wild pitch, but then Taylor induced an inning ending pop out to end the
threat.
Dash
picked up his second hit of the game against Braves reliever Thomas Burrows in
the 7th, but the Fireflies couldn’t get anything going in the frame.
With his pitch count at just 89,
Taylor went out for the 8th and threw a seven-pitch frame to keep
the game tied at zero.
It
took some help from Rome, but the Fireflies finally broke through to take a 1-0
edge in the bottom of the 8th. Colby Woodmansee connected for his
first hit as a Firefly to start the frame, went to second on a sac bunt, to
third on a groundout, and then came around to score the games only run on an E2.
Adonis
Uceta has struck out nearly 30% of the SAL batters he’s faced this year, but that
doesn’t mean it’s always going to be easy, and the 9th was not easy
for him Monday night. Crowley connected for his second double of the game
against Adonis in the 9th, which advanced Austin Bush (pinch-hit
single) to third with one out. After intentionally walking a batter to load the
bases, Uceta struck out Concepcion for a huge second out, and then Josephina
flew out to shallow CF to end the game.
Looking
ahead, the Columbia Fireflies are off to Augusta for a three-game series with
the Green Jackets before heading to Charleston this weekend. There is no
MiLB.tv coverage in Greenville, but they will be back on the MiLB.tv airwaves Friday
at 7:05 PM, and the River Dogs do a pretty good job covering the games.
