Recapish
After
rain wiped out Friday’s game, the Columbia Fireflies dropped their opener with
Rome 5-1 Saturday night. The game featured a matchup of two lefties that have a
chance to make a real impact in a major league rotation one day, as #4 Mets
prospect Thomas Szapucki faced off with #13 Braves prospect Joey Wentz. Wentz
got the better of Szapucki and the Fireflies this time, limiting the Cola
offense to just a bunt single over six dominant innings, but Szapucki gave the
locals a show too, especially early. The Fireflies middle infield of Luis
Carpio and Andres Gimenez finished with two hits apiece, but the rest of the
lineup went just 1-26, and those two were not close to each other in the
lineup.
Szapucki
came out on fire in the 1st, striking out three with eight swinging
strikes to work around a two out walk. The walk came on a close 3-2 pitch, and
would be one of three issued by Szapucki in this start.
Wentz
answered with a pair of strikeouts during a 1-2-3-4 1st inning, and
he only needed an extra out because his catcher committed a passed ball on the
first strikeout.
Rome
took advantage of a pair of leadoff singles to jump ahead 1-0 in the 2nd.
Lucas Herbert led off the frame with a single and came around to score on a
groundout three batters later.
Berrios couldn't quite catch it, but the dive did save extra bases |

The
Fireflies went down in order in the 2nd, and Wentz struck out all
three Cola batters swinging.
Gimenez
had the only hit off Wentz, a nice bunt single to advance Ian Strom (walk) into
scoring position with one out in the 3rd. Wentz responded with a strikeout
of Arnaldo Berrios, which started a streak off eleven straight set down that
took him to the end of his start. He added another three strikeouts along the
way.
After
allowing the run in the 2nd, Szapucki worked a perfect 3rd
and then struck out two more batters in the 4th. Unfortunately for
Columbia, Szapucki got into trouble again in the 5th and Rome was
able to take advantage of the situation for two more runs. The Braves managed
just a pair of singles in the frame, but the singles sandwiched an E4, a HBP,
and then a walk. The damage might’ve been worse if not for a pickoff at third
by Ali Sanchez, and then a nice double play started by Colby Woodmansee.
Adam
Atkins came out of the Cola pen for the 7th and worked a perfect
frame, striking out Randy Ventura along the way.
Jose
Leger then turned to Matt Pobereyko for the final two frames, and while he
induced a lot of weak contact, three of the flares against him fell in for
doubles and Rome was able to extend their lead by two runs in the 9th.
Before
those final two Rome runs came home, Columbia had scratched out a run in the 8th.
Gimenez reached on his second infield hit of the night, went to second on a sac
bunt, and then came home on an E6. Luis Carpio added a single for the Fireflies
in the 9th, but Columbia ran out of time before the comeback got any
steam.
After
dropping the opener of this series, Columbia will look to Thomas McIlraith
(1-0, 0.00 ERA) to even the series Sunday evening, with game time scheduled for
5:05 PM.
