Recapish
P.J.
Conlon turned in his third seven-inning complete game shutout of the season
Tuesday night, limiting the Akron Rubber Ducks to just three hits as the Rumble
Ponies easily won 13-0. Seven different Ponies players had hits in the blowout,
five of whom had multi-hit games, two of which were three-hit games. Gustavo Nunez
led the Ponies charge with a double, triple and three runs batted in, but it
was the lefty on the mound for Binghamton that took center stage this night.
Conlon’s
not the type of person who would readily admit this sort of thing at the time,
but (per the Binghamton broadcast) he was a little worn down towards the end of
the first half, and it was reflecting in his starts: he allowed five-plus runs
in three of his final four starts heading into the break. He was nominated to
the All-Star team, but chose to not participate in the game so he could get a
little fresher, and he told the broadcast that he thought it made a difference
in this start (I’m writing this after watching Wednesday’s games, when they
brought this up).
Conlon
allowed two runners to reach with two outs in the 2nd, and a one out
single in the 3rd, but then retired eleven in a row as the Rumble
Ponies opened up a 13-0 lead.
After
a little lull in June, Kevin Kaczmarski has been hot again in July and he connected
on the first hit of the game in the bottom of the 1st. Unfortunately
for the Ponies, he would be thrown out trying to steal just a few pitches
before L.J. Mazzilli doubled to RF.
Binghamton
would not let any opportunities go wasted in the 2nd, however, as
they jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Kevin Taylor sparked the rally with a leadoff
single, though he was replaced on the bases (by David Thompson) due to a
fielder’s choice. Tomas Nido singled Thompson to third and Nunez doubled him
home to give the Ponies a 1-0 lead. Champ Stuart and L.J. Mazzilli added RBI
hits to extend the lead to 5-0.
Nido
doubled off the third base bag in the 3rd and Champ doubled in the 4th,
but Nido’s limited speed limited him to second base, while Champ’s borderline
80-grade speed allowed him to move up on back-to-back outs and score.
Taylor
singled again leading off the 5th, but this time his hit did not
spark a rally.
The
Ponies would rally again in the 6th, and this time for seven runs.
The Ponies worked five walks in the frame, and there were RBI singles from Matt
Oberste and Tomas Nido. Gustavo Nunez started the frame with a single and later
tripled home two more runs to cap the scoring.
With
the game in tow, Conlon went out to wrap up his complete game shutout in the 7th
with a pitch count of 83. It took him 23 pitches and the first two reached, but
he was able to strand runners at the corners to seal the deal.
Looking
ahead, these two teams play another double-header Wednesday, with Chris Flexen
and Andrew Church scheduled to start for Binghamton.
