Recapish
Harol
Gonzalez turned in his best outing of 2017 and the Fireflies needed every bit
of it to avoid being swept by Kannapolis Monday night in Columbia. Gonzalez had
a season high nine strikeouts, walked nobody for the first time all year, and
matched his career high with eight innings. There were two well-struck balls
against him, and one left the yard for the Intimidators only run, but he just
got stronger as the night went on. Kannapolis starter Dylan Cease was making
his org. debut for the White Sox after coming over in the blockbuster Jose
Quintana trade, and he was untouchable early, but the Fireflies broke through
for a pair of runs in the 5th and that was the difference in the
game.
The
first of the two well-struck hits against Harol came in the 1st,
when Gavin Sheets doubled to the warning track in the RF corner. Gonzalez
responded with a strikeout of Micker Adolfo, which started a streak of seven
straight retired – Harol struck out the side in the 3rd on eleven
pitches during the streak.
As
sharp as Harol was to start the night, Cease was even better. He faced the
minimum over the first three innings, and struck out four of the first five
batters he faced.
Zach
Remillard broke the scoreless tie with a solo blast leading off the 4th.
Gonzalez struck out Gavin Sheets during the frame for his fifth strikeout.
Columbia
tried to answer back with a run in the bottom of the 4th, but they
ended up running into trouble instead. Luis Carpio and Desmond Lindsay
connected for back-to-back singles, but both were thrown out on the bases with
Dash Winningham at the plate.
Gonzalez
struck out Aaron Schnurbusch during a scoreless 5th.
After
having his RBI chance pulled out from underneath his feet in the 4th,
Dash Winningham started the Cola 5th with a single. He went to third
on a Dan Rizzie double, and then came home on a groundout to tie the game.
Rizzie advanced to third on the groundout, which allowed him to come home and
score the go-ahead run on a sac fly.
Mitch Roman led off the Kannapolis 6th
with an infield single and moved up third on a throwing error, but Harol would
face the minimum in the frame. The Intimidators tried to bunt Roman to third
with less than two outs, but Harol fielded the bunt and made a perfect throw to
third to get the lead runner. Rizzie then threw Remillard out trying to take
second base on a pitch in the dirt just a few pitches before Harol ended the
frame with a strikeout.
Harol
G started and ended the frame with strikeouts in the 7th, but he
allowed a single to Luis Gonzalez between the K’s. Fortunately, Harol was able
to pick Luis Gonzalez off at first, so he again faced the minimum in a frame.
Harol
began the 8th with his pitch count up to 86. He started the frame by
hitting Schnurbusch in the back of his cleats, and Schnurbusch took offense to
it for some reason. Like most pitchers, Harol lets a little emotion show after
some big strikeouts, so maybe he did something Schnurbusch didn’t like earlier
in the game, but this was just a breaking ball that got away and hit him in one
of the safest places you can get hit – there was no need to stare Harol down as
he went to first. The Intimidators tried to bunt Schnurbusch to second on the
next play, but Harol was able to field the ball and get the throw to the bag
ahead of Schnurbusch for the first out of the inning. It should’ve been
business as usual, but Schnurbusch started barking at some of the Fireflies
players, and that soon turned into a benches clearing incident. Nothing came of
the confrontation, and those are only the details I could gather from watching
on MiLB.tv and listening to the Cola announcers, but it seemed like one guy
making a huge deal out of nothing.
Play
wasn’t delayed for too long, but it only took a few pitches before there was
another delay from the Kannapolis side – they really had a short fuse at this
point in the game. The runner from first appeared to have second stolen, but
instead the Kannapolis batter was ruled out on interference, as the ump ruled
his bat to be in Rizzie’s way. This set off the Intimidators Manager Justin
Jirschele, and he was quickly tossed. He may have bumped the ump’s hat during
his tirade, and you don’t need an advanced lip reading degree to understand
what he thinks about home plate ump Forrest Ladd.
When
play finally resumed again, Harol ended the inning by getting a fly out to LF.
After all that controversy in the 8th, and with Harol’s pitch count
approaching 100, Manager Jose Leger decided to just bring in his closer for the
9th. Adonis Uceta has been great out of the Cola pen this year, and
nearly perfect with respect to run prevention over the past two months, so of
course he locked down the 9th with a scoreless frame.
Looking
ahead, Columbia has an off day Tuesday as they travel to Lexington to being a
series with the Legends.
