Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies offensive woes continued Sunday evening, as they dropped the
second game of this series to Kannapolis 3-0. The Fireflies were held to just
four hits for a second straight night, and they had just one at bats with a
runner in scoring position. Cola starter Gary Cornish had some control issues
in the 2nd, and Kannapolis took advantage of it for a run, but he
was otherwise sharp in his second start off the DL.
Cornish
struck out two during a perfect 1st.
He
made it three straight strikeouts when Micker Adolfo went down swinging to
start the 2nd, but then Cornish walked the next two batters. This
opened the door for a two out RBI single off the bat of Antonio Rodriguez,
although the inning did end on the play thanks to a great throw to third from
right fielder Arnaldo Berrios.
Ian
Strom connected for the Fireflies first hit in the bottom of the 2nd.
Kannapolis
second baseman J.J. Franco led off the 3rd with a single, but
Cornish faced the minimum in the frame thanks to a Dan Rizzie caught stealing.
Rizzie
then led off the bottom of the 3rd with a single.
Cornish
added a strikeout and faced the minimum again in the 4th, and then
he set the side down in order on two groundouts and a pop out in the 5th.
His streak of six straight retired was snapped when Aaron Schnurbusch doubled
off him in the 6th, and that was it for Cornish. With his starter’s
limited pitch count up to 84, Manager Jose Leger brought in lefty Taylor Henry
for the final out of the 6th.
Rizzie
added a second single in the 6th.
Henry
stuck around for the 7th, but he allowed two of three batters faced
to reach and both came around to score. Adam Atkins was on the mound when the
runs scored, as he allowed a two-run single to Franco. Atkins would bounce back
to strikeout Mitch Roman to end the 7th and then Schnurbusch and
Sheets in the 8th. Unfortunately, the Cola feed stopped using the CF camera later in the game.
Zanon's throw gets the out |
Andres
Gimenez had the final Cola hit of the game, when he reached on an infield
single with two outs in the 9th.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies will look to salvage a game from this series behind Harol
Gonzalez Monday night.
