Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s rolled into Albuquerque Friday night to start their final series
of the first half with the Isotopes, but blew a 4-2 lead late to take a game
one loss. 51s starter Donovan Hand turned in a very effective start for the
third time in five outings since returning from Double-A, but Alberto Baldonado
struggled after coming in to relieve Hand for the 7th. Offensively,
Dominic Smith continued his torrid July with his twelfth homer of the season,
and he was one of four 51s batters with a multi-hit game, but they managed just
four runs in the defeat.
Kevin
Plawecki struck for the first hit of the game when he doubled leading off the 2nd,
but the 51s could not get him home to take the lead. Jayce Boyd would single
him to third two batters later, but a Phil Evans double play grounder cut the
threat short.
Albuquerque
would jump ahead with two runs in the bottom of the 2nd. Cristhian
Adames doubled and came around to score on back-to-back singles, and then a
second run came home on an E6.

Given his busy travel schedule over
the next week – Vegas to Miami for the Future’s Game and festivities, then
Miami to Tacoma for the Triple-A All Star Game and festivities, then back to
Vegas for the second half (or hopefully Queens) – the Mets let Rosario skip
making a trip to Albuquerque for one game.
With Rosario gone, the shortstop
duties fall to Gavin Cecchini for the weekend, and his error problem at
shortstop reared its ugly head twice in the opener.
Hand
would run into trouble again during each of his last four frames, but unlike in
the 2nd inning, he was able to keep the Isotopes hitless with
runners in scoring position.
Dominic
Smith hit a one out single in the 4th.
The
51s tied this game up with two in the 5th. Jayce Boyd and Phillip
Evans singled, and then Jio Mier doubled them both home.
Smith
gave the 51s a 3-2 lead when he went deep in the 6th.
Las
Vegas made it a 4-2 lead with one more in the 7th. Phillip Evans led
off the frame with a single, went to second on a groundout, and then came
around to score on a Cody Decker double.
Unfortunately
for the 51s, it was downhill after that. Alberto Baldonado was fantastic for
the Rumble Ponies to start the season, allowing zero runs and posting a 25 K: 5
BB ratio in 16.2 IP, but he’s struggled to adjust to the PCL. After this
outing, he’s up to 24 IP for Las Vegas with 17 K: 14 BB and 22 R (21 ER)
allowed. He had been much better over his last 10 appearances (3.29 ERA over
13.2 IP), but Baldonado just didn’t have it on this night. The only out he was
credited with came when Kevin Plawecki caught a runner trying to steal second,
and Baldonado allowed back-to-back homers, which gave the Isotopes a 6-4 lead. Hansel Robles took over for Baldonado and worked 1.2 scoreless innings.
After
that, Plawecki connected for his second hit of the game in the 8th,
but the 51s offense was otherwise lifeless.
Looking
ahead, the 51s will give the ball to Wilfredo Boscan as they look to even the
series in game two Saturday night.
