Recap
The
Cyclones took the rubber match in Aberdeen Sunday evening behind a huge night
from Zach Mathieu at the plate, and some strong pitching. Brooklyn starter Eddie
Villasmil would allow only 4 hits over his 6 innings, but one of those hits
allowed was a two run bomb to Ryan Mountcastle (on the first pitch Mountcastle
saw in the NYPL), which gave the Iron Birds a 2-0 lead in the 2nd.
The Cyclones gradually came back in this game, with Jeff Diehl and Zach Mathieu
at the center of their 3 one-run rallies. Jose Celas, P.J. Conlon, and Carlos
Valdez each worked a scoreless inning in relief of Villasmil, holding onto the
tight one run lead. After emerging at the end of extended spring training (per
manager Tom Gamboa), Celas has mostly had a lost season, so it was nice to see
him throwing a scoreless inning to earn the win.
Check
out the scoring details below, including some highlights of the Cyclones
offense. The Cyclones head home to begin a series with Hudson Valley Monday
night at 7:00 PM, with Tyler Badamo (3-6, 3.53 ERA) scheduled to pitch for
Brooklyn.
The
Cyclones played 3 games in Aberdeen over the weekend, and Alfredo Reyes led off
the game with a single in all 3 games, although he’d only come around to score
once.
After
retiring the first 5 Aberdeen batters of the game, Edioglis Villasmil allowed a
two out single to Mike Odenwaelder, and then Ryan Mountcastle launched a two
run bomb to LF in his first NYPL at bat.
Zach
Mathieu doubled home Jeff Diehl (walk) in the 4th inning, but was
later thrown out at home trying to score on a single to LF from Brandon
Brosher.
Diehl
extended the 6th inning with a two out double lined to RF, and then came
home on an RBI infield single from Mathieu.
With
Kaupe on 1B from a leadoff walk in the 8th inning, Diehl singled to
CF, and both runners advanced when it was misplayed out there by Oswill
Lartiguez. Mathieu would come through with his third RBI hit of the night to
give the Cyclones a late lead.
Defensive Highlights
A couple of infield singles to the Cyclones middle infielders, and then Alfredo Reyes making a more routine play.
