Recap
The
Sand Gnats exploded for 20 runs on 24 hits against a helpless Rome pitching
staff Tuesday night to jump ahead in the series 2-0. After battling through a
scoreless 1st inning during which he left the bases loaded, Savannah’s
starter Corey Oswalt was really strong over his final 4 frames, but he’d be
removed with the team up 15-0 in the 6th. While 7 extra base hits
are a great total for any game, it’s pretty amazing that Savannah scored 20
runs without more. Patrick Biondi led the way with his 5 hits including a three
run bomb (see below for the highlights), but every Savannah player with an AB
picked up a hit in the game. They exploded for 8 runs in the 2nd inning,
when they sent 14 batters to the plate, and they never looked back. Eudor
Garcia appeared to be in a lot of pain after being HBP near the knee to start
the 2nd inning, and he would be removed after Mora’s AB, so
hopefully he’s OK. Ben Griset and Christian Montgomery worked a pair of innings
each, and I added some GIF’s of Monty’s nice breaking ball to the pitching
coverage below.
This
series wraps up Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 PM, with Ricky Knapp (5-2, 2.83
ERA) scheduled to pitch for Savannah.
The
Sand Gnats got their huge night started early, scoring 8 runs on 7 hits in the
2nd inning, with 14 PA’s coming from 10 different batters in the
frame. Eudor Garcia was hit above the knee leading off the inning, and then
would leave for a pinch runner after reaching 2B. After Michael Katz grounded
into a 5-2-5-1 force out, the next 7 Sand Gnats would reach on 5 hits, a walk
and a HBP: J.C. Rodriguez lined an RBI single into RF, Tyler Moore lined an RBI
single into RF, Vicente Lupo was HBP, Patrick Biondi lined a two run single
into RF, Luis Guillorme lined an RBI single into CF, Wuilmer Becerra lined an
RBI single into RF, and then Jonathan Johnson capped the scoring with an RBI
double into RF.
Guillorme
singled Lupo (HBP #2) to 2B in the 3rd inning, and then Becerra
doubled them home. Katz would double Becerra after a pitching change, and J.C.
followed with an RBI infield single.
They
would string together 5 straight hits for 3 more runs in the 4th, as
this game was getting out of hand: Biondi reached on an infield single with one
out, Guillorme followed with a single to LF, Becerra doubled home ‘Bondo’,
Johnson singled home Luis, and Mora capped the scoring when he singled home
Wuilmer.
Moore
picked up his second hit with J.C. (walk) on 1B and 0 outs in the 7th,
and then Biondi launched his second bomb of the year two batters later.
J.C.
doubled Mora (walk) home from 1B in the 8th inning, and the Rome
announcers didn’t like that Mora was waved home.
Lupo
led off the 9th with a booming double to CF, his 15th double of the year, and
then came home on Bondo’s fifth hit of the night.
