Recap
With
visions of the 2014 B-Mets flashing in my head, the battery of Tyler Pill and
Xorge Carrillo combined to shutdown Bowie for the first 5 innings, by which
point Binghamton had built a 7-0 lead. The B-Mets flexed their power Tuesday by
connecting for 3 bombs to LF for 6 of the 8 Binghamton runs – see below for
highlights of all 8, plus the game-ending double play. After Pill ran into some
trouble in the 6th inning, the B-Mets turned to Jeff Walters to bail
him out and work the 7th. Walters would allow a run to Bowie in the
7th, but the B-Mets still had a 5-run lead at that point, and then
Beck Wheeler was very sharp working the final two innings.
Pill’s
stuff plays up at sea level more than at the high elevation parks in the PCL,
and he’s already proven that he can dominate AA – starting with his May 11th
start with Binghamton in 2014, Pill had a 3.42 ERA, 2.93 FIP, .646 OPS allowed,
and 25.6 K%: 5.6 BB% through the end of the regular season – so he shouldn’t
have trouble there to finish the season. Binghamton never used a CF camera, so I
couldn’t see his stuff, but he wasn’t hit hard until the 6th inning,
when he allowed back-to-back doubles and a walk before being replaced.
This
series continues Wednesday night at 6:35 PM, with Robert Gsellman (5-5, 3.21
ERA) scheduled to pitch for Binghamton. Gsellman is 3-0 with a 0.68 ERA and
.419 OPS allowed over his last 4 starts (26.1 IP), but only has 9 strikeouts in
that span.
Brock
Peterson doubled home Josh Rodriguez with two outs in the 1st
inning, after J Rod had kept the inning alive with a single.
Jonathan
Galvez and Jared King hit solo blasts in the 2nd.
After
a walk and a pair of errors loaded the bases with 0 outs in the 5th inning, J Rod launched a
grand slam to give the B-Mets a 7-0 lead.
King
singled home Galvez to cap the Binghamton scoring in the 8th.
Bonus Defense
L.J. Mazzilli fielding a slow grounder in the 8th inning, and then the
game ended on a double play, which featured a nifty turn from Mazz.
