A day after the K-Mets clinched a playoff spot, they are getting some
extra help from the GCL Mets.
With
the GCL season coming to an end Saturday morning, the Mets have promoted two of
the team’s top performers to join the Kingsport Mets for a playoff run. Ali Sanchez, an 18-year-old catcher from Venezuala that the Mets
signed in 2013, and Adonis Uceta, a 21-year-old right-handed starting
pitcher who made his stateside debut in August 2014, join Kingsport a day after
the K-Mets clinched the Appy League Western division title. The GCL Mets final game was cancelled due to rain Saturday morning, although these two were likely already on their way to Kingsport. Eucebio Arias and Joe Shaw were placed on the 60-day DL to make room for them on the Kingsport roster.
Ali
Sanchez was a big-time international signing for the Mets back in 2013, as they
spent $690,000 on him, and he was the 25th best international
prospect at the time. Sanchez had a great catching reputation at the time, and
I heard multiple positive reports about him behind the plate this year.
Teammate, and fellow catcher, Anthony Dimino raved about him in this recent
post on 27outsbaseball

“Ali is a great player – unbelievable – especially at the
age of 18. The knowledge, his hand-eye coordination at the plate is great. He’s
got a good approach. His catching is beyond what I would expect from an
18-year-old. His receiving is great. Pitch-calling – he knows what he’s doing
and has a plan for every different guy…. He’s been around the team for extended
training, which is a big deal. He tells me little intricacies about the game
and the team, and how to play at the professional level.”
Sanchez
finished the GCL season with a .278/.399/.315 slash over 177 PA, including 6
doubles, 17 RBI, and a 14.7 K%: 6.8 BB% at the plate, and caught 25 of 52 base
runners trying to steal against him. After maintaining a .730+ OPS over his
first 2 months of the season, he has struggled in August, with a .534 OPS in 73
PA. He hasn’t hit for much power yet, but he’s still very young.
Adonis
Uceta is a little older for the GCL, but he had a very good season with the GCL
Mets, allowing 2 ER or less in 9 of 12 games. He finished top-10 on the GCL
leader boards in ERA (3.08), FIP (2.61), Strikeouts (46), and BB% (3.5%). There
is little information about DSL/GCL pitchers, so hopefully we can learn more
about Adonis before the end of 2015 now that he’s reached Kingsport.
