Recap
Seth
Lugo’s second start with Las Vegas ended the same with his first one did, with
a victory for the 51s. Lugo was very efficient early, limited the damage during
a long 5th inning, and then was relieved with a 5-3 lead after 6
strong innings. Cody Satterwhite held onto the lead with a scoreless 7th
inning, but then allowed 3 of 4 Cubs batters to reach for 2 runs in the 8th
inning before Alex Torres came in to bail him out. John Church held the tie in
the top of the 9th inning, and then the 51s would walk off on a
bases loaded HBP to Dan Rohlfing for the win.
Lugo
did a very nice job of spotting his fastball to both sides throughout the
start, and he mixed in his slider, changeup and curveball more as the start
went on. His biggest promblem was Arismendy Alcantara, who went 3-3 against
Lugo. Alcantara’s one out single in the 5th would spark an Iowa
rally against Lugo. Baxter followed with a double to RF that advanced Arismendy
to 3B, and then pinch-hitter Adron Chambers singled them both home. Lugo would
work around a missed catch error by Dilson Herrera to finish the frame with a
4-3 lead.
Las
Vegas struck first for 2 runs in the 3rd inning, scoring both runs
on a play that featured an Iowa error – Baez made a throwing error that would
allow Dilson to score, and Jokish made a throwing error that would allow
Reynolds to score. Kevin Plawecki put a surge into a double leading off the 4th,
but he’d be thrown out at home two batters later. Dilson followed with an RBI
single to give Las Vegas a 3-1 lead, and an RBI fielder’s choice from Eric
Campbell would make it 4-1. After Iowa pulled to 4-3 in the 5th, Las
Vegas extended their lead again in the 6th. Dilson hit a one out
double to CF, and then scored on an RBI single from Reynolds.
In
the 8th, Satterwhite allowed a leadoff single to Javier Baez, and
then Mike Olt would double Baez and Taylor Teagarden home 3 batters later.
With
one out in the bottom of the 9th, Eric Campbell reached on an
infield single to spark the game-winning rally. Kirk followed with a single
lined into CF, which advanced Soup to 3B. After Kirk took 2B on defensive
indifference, the Cubs intentionally walked Ceciliani to load the bases. Iowa
reliever Blake Cooper would then hit Dan Rohlfing with a pitch to bring home
the winning run – it feels good to be on the winning end of that type of play!
The
51s welcome the Omaha Stormchasers into town Wednesday night at 10:05 PM, with
Matthew Bowman (7-13, 5.19 ERA) scheduled to pitch for Las Vegas.
