Recap

The B-Mets last trip through New Britain ended in victory Sunday afternoon behind a great all-around performance from Tyler Pill. Not only did Pill throw 6 shutout innings for Binghamton, he also went 3-4 at the plate with an RBI single, combining with L.J. Mazzilli for half of the teams hits. Mazzilli had been hitless in the series coming into the game, but ended up with his fourth 4-hit game since joining the B-Mets on 6/6. Gavin Cecchini had a nice day in the field for Binghamton, and reached base 4 times in his 5 PA. Erik Goeddel came in to relieve Pill in the 7th inning, and he looked very good, sitting at 93 MPH with his fastball. After getting ahead of leadoff batter Pat Valeika, Goeddel threw him a knee-high fastball on the outside corner, but Valeika did a nice job of going with the ball, ending up with a double lined down the RF line. Goeddel would bounce back to induce a fly out before striking out the final two batters of the frame (see below). Jon Velasquez and Paul Sewald did their thing to keep the shutout intact over the final two innings for Binghamton, which improved to 65-54 on the season – they are in 2nd place, 3.5 games behind Reading for 1st, and 3.5 games ahead of Trenton for a playoff spot.
Check out some highlights from the game below. The B-Mets head home for a 3-game series against Richmond that starts Tuesday, when they’ll send Seth Lugo (6-5, 3.80 ERA) to the hill.

Scoring Highlights

L.J. Mazzilli started his big night day with a two out single in the 4th inning.

The B-Mets finally broke through in the 6th inning, scoring 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk. Xorge Carrillo hit a one out single to LF, and then L.J. Mazzilli doubled him home from 1B. Tyler Pill had a big day on the mound and at the plate, and his third hit of the game was an RBI single to CF.

Joe Benson started the 7th inning with a single to LF, but Gilbert Gomez would come in to pinch run for him. Brock Peterson singled Gomez to 2B, and then Mazzilli singled him home for an insurance run. Jared King would follow with a two out infield single to load the bases, but Tyler Pill couldn’t make it a perfect 4-4 at the plate, grounding out to 1B instead.

Gavin Cecchini led off the 8th by reaching on an infield single, but T.J. Rivera followed by hitting a double play grounder to 2B. Mazz would finish his big night with a single in the 9th.

Defense Highlights

Tyler Pill made this nice play in the 1st inning, and Gavin Cecchini made several nice plays throughout the game.
