Recap
The
Cyclones rolled into Aberdeen with a 3-game winning streak and looking to force
their way back into the playoffs race, but their offense sputtered once again,
as they fell 5-1 to the Iron Birds. Brooklyn starter Gaby Almonte put the
Cyclones in a hole early, allowing consecutive extra base hits that were both
just fair down the RF line to start the 1st inning, as Aberdeen
jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Almonte was very good after those extra base hits
allowed in the 1st inning, but the Iron Birds would tag him for
another run in the 5th inning. After managing only 3 singles through
the first 5 innings, the Cyclones would start the 6th with 3
straight singles to load the bases with their 3-4-5 hitters due up, which would
be their best chance to fight back into this game. Unfortunately, they could
only get one run on a sac fly, and they’d leave the bases loaded. After Nicco
Blank was very sharp in relief of Almonte during the 7th inning,
Brandon Welch came in and things got wild. The announcers mentioned multiple
times that the infielders looked confused, and Welch issues a HBP, a walk, and 2
wild pitches.
This
series continues Saturday night at 7:05 PM, with Andrew Church (1-3, 4.50 ERA)
scheduled to pitch for Brooklyn.
Alfredo
Reyes led off the game with a single into RF, but he’d be caught trying to
steal 2B with Vinny Siena up.
The
Iron Birds jumped ahead in the bottom of the 1st with 2 runs on 4
hits from the first 5 batters. Cedric Mullins led off with a triple, and then
Ricardo Andujar doubled him home. After Gaby Almonte recorded his first out of
the game, Chris Shaw singled home Andujar for the Birds second run.
Andujar
led off the 5th with a double, and then D.J. Stewart singled him in
one batter later.
The
Cyclones loaded the bases with 0 outs in the 6th inning, but could
only get one run on a sac fly from Jeff Diehl – they’d re-load the bases after
the second out, but Zach Mathieu flied out to end the threat. Manuel Hilario,
Reyes, and Siena reached on consecutive singles to spark the run.
Brandon
Welch came in to pitch the 8th inning for Brooklyn, and he’d allow
the first 2 batters to reach on a HBP and BB. After recording two outs on
groundballs – one at 1B and one at home – the Cyclones brought in Ruben Reyes
to face Drew Turbin. Turbin would come through for Aberdeen with a 2 run double
before Reyes could record the third out in the frame.
Defensive Highlights
Vinny
Siena had to go a long distance to get this grounder, but then he couldn’t get
the ball to 1B in time.
Siena
started a double play in the 5th with a broken bat heading towards
his pitcher.
With
runners on 2B and 3B and nobody out in the 8th, Siena made a great
diving stop to hold the runners, and then Reyes made a strong throw home on the
next play for the second out.
