Recap
The
Sand Gnats got back to their winning ways in Rome Monday night, coming back to
beat the Braves thanks to a pair of late rallies. Starter Michael Gibbons was
sharp for sharp early for the Sand Gnats, but got wild in the 6th
inning, when Rome took a brief lead. Although 8 of the 9 starters had a hit, it
was the bottom of the lineup sparked Savannah’s offense in this game, as J.C.
Rodriguez and Vicente Lupo combined to go 5-8 with 3 doubles while scoring 4 of
the teams runs. Edioglis Villasmil came in to relieve Gibbons from a tough
situation in the 6th inning, stranding both inherited runners to
keep it a 4-2 game, and then earning the win when Savannah jumped ahead in the
7th inning. Alberto Baldonado worked a perfect 9th for
Savannah, which is something the Sand Gnats may call on him to do often down
the stretch now that James Duff has been promoted to St. Lucie.
Gibbons
allowed 8 hits in his 5.1 IP, but they were all singles, and only Matt Tellor
was hitting him hard. As you can see in Table 1 at the bottom, he had near
perfect control in the 1st, 2nd, and 5th
innings, but was a little more wild in the 3rd, 4th and 6th
innings, which is when Rome threatened. In the 3rd, the first two
Braves batters reached on singles, but Gibbons worked his way through the
trouble. After Ozhaino Albies sac bunted them over to 2B and 3B, Gibbons
retired Omar Obregen swinging, and then J.C. made a nice play at 3B to end the
frame. The first three batters of the 4th inning hit two fly outs
and a dribbler up the 3B line, which is usually good enough for a quick inning,
but the dribbler went for a single (see below), and Rome capitalized for 2
runs. With two outs and the runner on 1B, the Braves picked up consecutive
singles for their first run. The inning should’ve ended after the next batter,
as he hit a weak grounder that Katz handled no problem, but Gibbons couldn’t
catch the throw to 1B (for an E1), which allowed the tying run to score. The 6th
inning did not go well for Gibbons: walk, single, sac fly, single, walk, exit
stage left.
This
series continues Tuesday night at 7:00 PM, with Corey Oswalt (7-4, 3.86 ERA)
scheduled to pitch for Savannah.
J.C.
Rodriguez sparked the first rally of the game with a double lined into the LF
corner. After Vicente Lupo singled JC to 3B, Jonathan Johnson and Luis
Guillorme followed with RBI singles to give Savannah a 2-0 lead.
Vicente
Lupo picked up his first double leading off the 5th inning, but he’d
be thrown out at home during the frame.
Lupo
would add his second double with one out in the 7th inning. After a
pair of walks loaded the bases, Eudor Garcia came through with a 2 run single
that tied the game. Michael Katz would follow with an RBI single to give
Savannah the lead back at 5-4.
JC
led off the 8th with a single lined into CF, and then came around to
score on a single from Johnson into RF. Guillorme would knock in Johnson with a
sac fly.
