Recap
While
you can never predict what’s going to happen in baseball (#CantPredictBall),
some games just start so oddly that you have a feeling things are going to be weird like that all day. That’s what
happened to Mets prospect Kevin McGowan Tuesday night, and it set the tone for
the entire double-header with Erie. McGowan was promoted to the B-Mets to help
with their busy schedule this week, so he was making his AA debut, and the
first AA batter that he faced hit a little league homerun against him. After
getting ahead 1-2 in the count, McGowan allowed a liner into the right center
field gap that just kept rolling, and then a spiked relay throw allowed the
speedy runner to just keep running around 3B and score. Binghamton would tie
the game in the bottom of the 1st, but then McGowan couldn’t get the
third out of the inning in the 2nd, allowing 5 two out hits for a 3
run rally that the B-Mets couldn’t recover from. Overall, he pitched better
than the final line would suggest, getting some awkward swings in the 1st
and 3rd innings, but he ran into the same two out problems that
plagued him with St. Lucie earlier this year. Akeel Morris would bail McGowan out
of a bases loaded jam in the 4th inning, and then combined with Beck
Wheeler for 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, but the Binghamton bats just
couldn’t get going again against Erie starter Chad Green.
Check out scoring details and some game highlights below. These
two would play a night cap, with both teams planning to use their bullpens for
all 7 innings.
Wynton
Bernard hit a ball towards the right center field gap that should’ve been a
double, but because Jared King misplayed the ball, Bernard was going into 3B
safely with a triple. But that wasn’t the end of the play, as relay man L.J.
Mazzilli didn’t realize he’d have no play at 3B until he was already in his
throwing motion, and ended up spiking the ball as a result, which allowed
Bernard to round 3B and head home without a play – I had to double check that I
didn’t accidentally put on the little league world series.
T.J.
Rivera hit a one out double in the bottom of the 1st, Josh Rodriguez
singled him to 3B, and then he scored on a sac fly from Brock Peterson.
Despite
allowing a leadoff single in the frame, Kevin McGowand was on the verge of
getting out of the 2nd inning unscathed thanks to a double plays,
but then he’d allowed 5 straight two out hits for 3 Erie runs: James Robbins
singled to LF, a wild pitch advanced Robbins to 2B, and then Alberto Gonzalez
singled him home, Harold Castro would double Gonzalez home from 2B, and then he
scored on a single from Bernard to give Erie a 4-1 lead.
Xorge
Carrillo’s two out single in the 2nd inning. L.J. Mazzilli picked up
his only hit of game one in the 3rd inning, but the threat was cut
short by an 9-3 double play – L.J. didn’t track the ball, and the right fielder
made a nice diving catch to rob Rivera of a hit.
Robbins
and Gonzalez led off the 4th with a pair of singles for Erie, and
then Robbins would come around to score on a sac fly from Castro.
Defensive Highlights
Check
out L.J. Mazzilli making a nice spin play in the 2nd inning, in the
middle of a 6-4-3 double play in the 4th, and then starting a 4-3
double play to end the 7th.
