Binghamton Rumble Ponies @ Portland Sea Dogs
April 10-12, 2017
This
is a breakdown from the Binghamton Rumble Ponies April series against the
Portland Sea Dogs that I hadn’t initially covered. The goal with these ‘Series
in Review’ posts wasn’t to cover the series as fully as I normally would but to
highlight a few players who didn’t get as much coverage throughout the rest of
the season.

Series in Review
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies took an 8-5 loss in an opener that featured a combined
23 hits. The Ponies jumped ahead early, but then Portland took a 5-2 lead
against Casey Delgado. Binghamton would battle back to make this a 5-4 game,
but then Portland put a 3-spot up against Luis Mateo in the 7th.
Every Ponies player reached base at least once and Patrick Biondi struck for
his first of two 2017 homers. Kyle Regnault stopped the bleeding in the 7th
and worked a scoreless 8th for Binghamton.
Binghamton
took a 3-2 extra inning loss in a tightly contested game two of the series. Mickey
Jannis was effective for 5 innings but left trailing 2-1. The Ponies managed
just 5 hits but they worked 7 walks, so they had plenty of scoring opportunities.
Unfortunately, they went 0-12 at the plate during those opportunities.
Fortunately, lefties Kelly Secrest and Alberto Baldonado each contributed 2
scoreless innings in relief of Jannis, which left the door open for a Ponies
comeback. Binghamton loaded the bases and got the tying run home in the 9th,
but they couldn’t jump ahead, and then Portland walked off in the 10th.
The winning rally was started with a Tzu-Wei Lin double against Corey Taylor.
The
Ponies pen nearly blew it late for a second straight night, but Binghamton held
on to salvage a win from this series in the finale. Reliever Corey Taylor
allowed the tying run to score in the 9th, which forced this game
into extras, but the Ponies struck first to take a 4-3 win. Luis Guillorme had
a big day at the plate for Binghamton, finishing 5-5 with a double hit high off
the top of the ‘mini-Monster’ in LF. Although Taylor blew it, there were
several good relief outings from this game highlighted below: Tim Peterson
struck out 3 over 2 scoreless, Kyle Regnault and Ben Griset each added 2 K’s, and
Jamie Callahan struck out 2 for Portland.
