Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies offense saved the fireworks for after the home finale
Thursday night, putting up a goose egg during the game against Asheville for a
third straight loss to the Tourists. Cola starter Darwin Ramos fell behind
early and left down 4-0 after six innings, but even a great outing from him
would’ve needed some run support. Logan Longwith gave the Tourists a very good
outing, taking the shutout into the 7th with just five base runners
allowed without the aid of an error.
The
Cola lineup has struggled to find consistent production recently, as some of
the top second-half performers earned late-season promotions to St. Lucie, plus
Gene Cone and Dash Winningham haven’t been up to full speed since coming off
the DL. Even with the benefit of three Tourists errors, the Fireflies didn’t
have many scoring opportunities in this one, and they finished 0-6 with runners
in scoring position.
All
four Cola hits were singles, and they came from: Quinn Brodey in the 1st,
Oliver Pascual in the 5th, Reed Gamache in the 7th, and
then Jay Jabs leading off the 9th.
On
the pitching side, a barrage of singles did in Cola starter Darwin Ramos. Ramos
allowed singles to the first two Tourists batters of the game and both came
around to score and give Asheville a 2-0 lead before the Fireflies even came to
the plate. The Tourists doubled their lead with three more singles in a two-run
4th. Manuel Melendez came through with the two-out single for both
RBI’s in the frame.
Cola
Manager Jose Leger went to his pen for lefty Taylor Henry in the 7th.
Henry allowed a leadoff single but then retired six in a row for two scoreless innings
of work.
Cameron
Griffin took over for Henry in the 9th and struck out the side on 19
pitches.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies head to Rome for a four-game set with the Braves to wrap
up the 2017 season.
